The AT811's casing ply is a dual cord: two reinforcing fibres twisted together in each
cord, so the sheet is much harder to tear or push a stone through. It is the part of the tyre you never
see and the part that decides whether a sharp rock on a river crossing is a scuff or a write off. You
notice it as a tyre that holds its shape when aired down and shrugs off impacts that would bruise a
road casing. There is no grade for it; the three ply sidewall it supports is the visible clue.

Debri-Shield: the three ply sidewall

The sidewall is the weak flank of every four wheel drive tyre, because it is thin, it flexes, and it is
what a rock or a stump catches when the track narrows. The AT811 builds it three plies thick and then
wraps the shoulder tread blocks over the top of it, so the first thing a rock meets is a block of tread
rubber rather than the sidewall itself. You notice it when a track scrapes the side of the tyre and
leaves a mark on a block instead of a cut in the sidewall. It is also why the tyre is heavier than a
road tyre, and why it can be run at low pressure on sand without folding.

3D sipes and multi angled sipes

A sipe is a fine slit across a tread block, and every slit is an extra edge that bites. The AT811's
sipes are cut in three dimensions, zigzagging down into the block rather than straight, and at several
angles across it. Off road, with the tyre moulding itself over a rock or a rut, each part of the block
can flex on its own and find its own grip. Under hard braking on the road the zigzag faces of the sipe
push against each other and lock the block into one solid piece, so it does not squirm. You notice it
as bite on a loose climb and a firm pedal on the seal, from the same tread.

Stepped chamfers on the block edges

A big square tread block slaps the road as it lands and drags as it leaves, which is the noise and the
uneven wear an aggressive all terrain is known for. The AT811 cuts the leading edge of each block in
steps, like a small staircase, so the block eases onto the road rather than hitting it flat and keeps
more of its face on the ground under braking. You notice it as a tyre that is quieter around town than
it looks, and that stops squarely instead of chattering. It is the road manner Maxxis added to the
Razr; the AT-S goes further down that path if quiet is the priority.

Two part shoulder blocks with a clearance groove

The shoulder blocks are split in two with an extra deep groove between the halves, and each half is
cut with its own edges. On a rutted track the split gives the tyre twice as many biting edges where the
weight sits on a side slope, and the deep groove between them is a channel for mud and stones to clear
out of instead of packing in. You notice it as a tyre that keeps gripping on a greasy sidling and
cleans itself when you get back on the throttle. On the road, the same open shoulder is part of the
noise, and we would rather say that than pretend it is silent.

A compound against cuts and chips, under a nylon cap

Gravel and rock do not wear an all terrain out so much as chip it: sharp stones tear pieces from the
block edges until the tyre is ragged. The AT811's compound is blended with extra damage resistant
fillers so the rubber tears less, and a high tensile nylon cap ply under the tread holds the whole
tread band flat at speed and adds a layer for a stone to get through. You notice it as square block
edges after a season on metal roads and a stable, round tyre at highway speed. The open blocks and the wrap over shoulders that make it work off road cost it noise and wet braking against a highway tyre on the same ute, and it is heavier, which the fuel bill notices. Our listing carries no European label, so there is no wet grip grade to quote. The AT-S has a tighter tread, a bridged centre rib and a pitch arrangement tuned for quiet. Tracks, river crossings, rocks and a tray full of gear, the AT811. What we can say is that in the United States Maxxis grades the Razr AT at 600 for treadwear on the 265/70R17 and backs it with a 60,000 mile treadwear warranty, about 97,000 km, which it would not do on a tyre it expected to vanish early; that warranty applies in the United States and we quote it as evidence, not as cover. The compound is built against cutting, tearing and chunking, which on gravel is what ends an all terrain before wear does.
