Maxxis cuts the
AT-S blocks in a mix of lengths and sets them in a computed order, so the sound spreads across many
frequencies and the ear stops picking out a note. It is why this is the quiet Razr, and why owners
score noise and comfort highest. The label figure is 72 to 73 decibels on our listings, which is ordinary for the
size; the difference is in the character of the sound, not the level.

A semi continuous centre rib

Down the middle of the tread the blocks are joined to each other by rubber bridges, so the centre
behaves almost like one continuous rib. A solid centre resists the push of a tall vehicle, keeps the
steering consistent on a cambered highway and stops the blocks squirming under braking, which is the
movement that wears a block tyre unevenly. The bridges are also why the AT-S tracks straight and
feels closer to a highway tyre than its tread suggests, and why it is not the tyre for deep mud: a
rib does not self clean the way an open block does.

Saw toothed circumferential grooves

The grooves that run around the tyre are not straight sided: the block edges along them are cut in a
saw tooth. On a wet road the grooves do the ordinary job of carrying water out from under the tread.
On gravel and clay the saw teeth give the tyre edges that face sideways as well as forward, so it
bites when the ute is climbing a rutted track or holding a line on a loose corner, and the zigzag
helps a stone that gets in work its way out again. The wet grip grade on our listings is C and D: better
than a mud terrain, behind a highway tyre.

Lightning lateral grooves

The grooves that run across the tread from the centre to the shoulder are cut in a lightning bolt
zigzag rather than a straight line. A zigzag groove has more edge for its length, so it bites harder
when the tyre is braking and accelerating, and it sheds water sideways towards the shoulder to keep
the contact patch dry in a downpour. It also lets each block lean on its neighbour under load, which
keeps the blocks stable on the highway. In the wet you notice it as a tyre that brakes cleanly for an
all terrain; on gravel, as bite from a standing start.

Reinforced bridges for even wear

All terrain blocks wear on their leading edges first, because that is the edge that drags as the
block enters and leaves the road, and once the edges round off the tyre gets noisier and grips less.
The AT-S ties its blocks together with reinforced bridges at the base, so each block is held from
behind and cannot rock as far. Less rocking means the edge stays square for longer and the tread
wears down evenly rather than into the heel and toe pattern you can feel as a hum on a worn all
terrain. Rotating the tyres regularly finishes the job.

A compound built against cuts and chips

Gravel does not wear a tyre so much as chip it: sharp stones tear small pieces out of the tread
blocks, and a road compound loses its edges quickly on a metal road. Maxxis blends the AT-S compound
from a new generation polymer with reinforced carbon black nanoparticles, which is the filler that
makes rubber tougher and more tear resistant. You notice it as a tyre that still has square block
edges after a season of gravel. There is no treadwear grade on our listings to put a number on it,
and we do not invent one.

Read the label for your size, not for the pattern

The European label is measured size by size, so the same tread can grade differently on a different
    casing.
