The short answer

Goodyear's flagship road tyre and the one most people mean when they say Eagle F1. Sixth generation of the Asymmetric, and the most independently tested tyre Goodyear makes.

  • Eight wins from about 32 independent tests, average finish third.
  • Aquaplaning is the weak spot. Everything else is strong. We would rather say so here.
  • Sizes we can get run 18 to 22 inch. Goodyear also makes it in 17.
  • Driving an SUV? There is a separate SUV version with the load ratings a heavier vehicle needs.

What it is built to do

A fast road tyre for hot hatches, performance saloons and anything else that gets driven properly on seal.

Goodyear builds it around two named technologies. Dry Contact Plus uses an adaptive contact patch and an optimised cavity shape to put more rubber where the load actually goes, which is what you feel as steering response. Wet Braking Pro is a resin compound aimed at grip on damp and wet roads. It is also built to be electric vehicle compatible, so it is a legitimate option on a fast EV, though the ElectricDrive range exists if range and cabin noise matter more to you than lap times.

This is the sharp one, not the long-life one If what you actually want is a premium tyre that lasts, look at EfficientGrip Performance or Assurance MaxGuard instead. Both are built around mileage and protection rather than pace, and both cost less.

Most tyres you can buy have never been in an instrumented comparison test. This one has been in about thirty two of them, against Michelin, Continental, Bridgestone and Pirelli, and it averages third. That is a more useful number than a single win, because a single win only tells you who turned up that day.

Auto Bild's 2025 test gave it the outright win in 225/40R18, along with the "Eco-Master" title and a measured 54,020 km of tread life, the best in that test.

Where it falls down Straight-line aquaplaning is its recurring soft spot, and it swings from class-leading to last depending on the test. It also dropped to sixth of nine in the Auto Express 2025 summer test. If you do a lot of open-road driving through standing water, that is the trade-off you are making.

Read the label for your size, not for the pattern

The same Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 grades C for efficiency, A for wet grip and B for noise in 225/45R17, and A, A and A in 225/45R18. Identical tread pattern, different casing, different result.

That is why every rating on our product pages sits against the size you are buying and never against the pattern name. If a retailer quotes you one label for a whole pattern, they are quoting you a number that may not apply to your tyre.

Is it the right tyre

Is the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 actually any good?

It is the most tested tyre Goodyear makes. Across roughly 32 independent tests it has taken eight outright wins and averages a finish of third. Averaging third against every premium rival, in every test worth running, is a harder result than one win against a soft field. Auto Bild's 2025 test gave it the win in 225/40R18 and measured 54,020 km of tread life, the best in that test.

What is it not good at?

Straight-line aquaplaning. It is the tyre's recurring soft spot and it swings from class-leading to last depending on the test. It also dropped to sixth of nine in the Auto Express 2025 summer test. If you spend a lot of time at open-road speed through standing water, that is worth knowing before you buy.

Will it fit an electric car?

Goodyear builds the Asymmetric 6 with what it calls an electric-vehicle compatible design, so yes. Check the load index against your door placard first, because an EV is usually heavier than the petrol car it looks like, and there is also a dedicated ElectricDrive range if range and noise matter more to you than lap times.
Sizes and generations

What is the difference between the Asymmetric 6 and the Asymmetric 3 or 5?

They are earlier generations of the same tyre, and both are still made because car makers keep ordering them for models that were homologated on them. If your car came on an Asymmetric 3 or 5 with a marking on the sidewall, ask for that one rather than the 6. Matching the original fitment beats moving up a generation.

Why is the rating different on two sizes of the same tyre?

Because the label is measured per size, not per pattern. The Asymmetric 6 grades C for efficiency, A for wet grip and B for noise in 225/45R17, and A, A and A in 225/45R18. Same tread, different casing and different result. That is why our ratings sit against the size you are buying rather than the pattern name.

Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 or Michelin Pilot Sport 5?

They are direct rivals and they meet in the same tests, which is the honest way to answer it. The Asymmetric 6 averages third across about 32 independent tests with eight wins. Where it tends to lose is straight-line aquaplaning, and where it tends to win is dry handling and tread life. If you want the cheapest way to find out, tell us the size and we will price both.

Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 or EfficientGrip Performance?

Different jobs. The Asymmetric 6 is the sharp one, built around dry response and wet grip. The EfficientGrip Performance is built around mileage and wet braking, with what Goodyear calls Mileage Plus, and it costs less. If the car is quick and you drive it that way, take the Eagle F1. If you want a premium tyre that lasts, take the EfficientGrip.

Does the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 have a UTQG rating?

No. Not one of the 403 registered variants in our database carries a UTQG treadwear or traction grade, because it is registered on the European label system instead. The Asymmetric 3 and Asymmetric 2 before it do carry UTQG, at 240 to 300 treadwear with AA traction, so if you see a UTQG figure quoted for an Asymmetric 6 it is almost certainly the older generation's.

How good is it in the wet, really?

Consistently good, and we can show the working. Of the 403 registered variants of this tyre we hold label data for, 394 carry the top A grade for wet grip and the other nine are B. That is unusually even across 129 different sizes. The caveat, which we would rather say than hide, is that straight-line aquaplaning is a separate measurement and that is where this tyre is weakest.
