The short answer

Hilo comes out of the same factory as our Anchee range, with patterns of its own: an everyday car tyre, two performance tyres, an SUV highway tyre, mud and all terrains for utes, and a van tyre. Seven patterns and 19 sizes, 14 to 20 inch.

  • Made by Xingyuan, the maker of our Anchee range: the same factory code, 1HK, on both.
  • Sport XV1 graded 520 for treadwear, 30% above the median of 400 for the tyres we inspect.
  • Vantage XU1 for 19 and 20 inch wheels, graded 480: half as much again as the median low profile tyre we inspect.
  • Traction A and temperature A on every UTQG graded size.
  • X-Terrain MT1 and XT1 in light truck sizes for utes and 4WDs, up to 10 ply.
  • Fitted in our Te Puke workshop or delivered, free in the North Island.

Who makes Hilo

Seven patterns from the factory behind our Anchee range.

Hilo tyres are made by Xingyuan in Shandong, China, the maker of the Anchee range we have imported since 2018. It is the same factory, and the tyres show it: the DOT codes in our workshop records put Hilo and Anchee alike in the factory coded 1HK. In the European Union's tyre label registry both brands are registered by the same factory company, Shandong Xinghongyuan Tyre.

New Green Plus stock, 225/50R17, graded 480 A A on its label.

The range covers the everyday market end to end: the Genesys XP1 for everyday cars, the Green Plus and Vantage XU1 for performance cars, the Sport XV1 for SUVs, the X-Terrain MT1 and X-Terrain XT1 for utes and 4WDs, and the Brawn XC1 for vans. Every tyre is fitted and balanced in our own Te Puke workshop or delivered to your door.

The Hilo range

Every pattern in one table, read from our live listings and the EU tyre registry on 25 September 2026. The range grows, so if the size you need is missing, ask.

Pattern Built for Sizes Rims (inch) UTQG EU label
Genesys XP1 Everyday car tyre 2 15 and 16 UTQG 420 A A Fuel C or D, wet B or C, 71 dB
Green Plus Performance car tyre 3 16 and 17 UTQG 480 A A Fuel C or D, wet C, 71 to 72 dB
Vantage XU1 Ultra high performance, 19 and 20 inch 4 19 and 20 UTQG 480 A A Fuel C or D, wet B or C, 72 to 73 dB
Sport XV1 Highway tyre for SUVs 3 17 to 20 UTQG 520 A A Fuel C or D, wet B or C, 71 to 73 dB
X-Terrain MT1 Mud terrain for utes and 4WDs 5 15 to 17 Light truck, rated on load Not in the EU registry
X-Terrain XT1 All terrain for utes and 4WDs 1 16 Light truck, rated on load Not in the EU registry
Brawn XC1 Van tyre 1 14 Van tyre, rated on load Fuel D, wet D, 71 dB

UTQG is the American grading of treadwear, traction and temperature; light truck and van tyres are not graded under it and are rated on load and ply instead. The EU label grades fuel efficiency and wet grip from A to E, A the best, and gives the outside noise in decibels. Hilo registers most sizes more than once and the grades can differ by a letter between entries, so the table gives every grade on record; the label on the tyre gives the grades for that tyre.

Genesys XP1: the everyday car tyre

Hilo Genesys XP1 tyre
A new Genesys XP1 in our workshop, 195/55R15.
Hilo Genesys XP1 tyre
Its label. Graded 420 for treadwear, traction A, temperature A.

Made for the daily drive. Four straight grooves drain the water from under the tyre, a finely divided tread keeps its grip on a wet road, and a silica compound gives the tread the stiffness to wear evenly and roll easily, which saves fuel. The pattern is laid out to keep road noise down, and a cut resistant tread keeps the wear even. Graded 420 A A, above the median of 400 for the tyres we inspect. Two sizes, 15 and 16 inch.

Green Plus: the performance car tyre

Hilo Green Plus tyre
The Green Plus. Asymmetric, built for the corners.
Hilo Green Plus tyre
A new Green Plus in our workshop, 225/50R17.

An asymmetric performance tyre that splits the work across the tread: wide ribs and a closed shoulder on the outside for sharp steering and cornering, wide grooves and dense siping on the inside for braking and clearing water. A high grip silica compound holds the road wet or dry, a jointless nylon cap and wide steel belts keep the tyre in shape at speed, and five pitch lengths keep it quiet. Graded 480 A A. Three sizes, 16 and 17 inch.

See the Green Plus range: 3 sizes

Vantage XU1: the ultra high performance tyre

Hilo Vantage XU1 tyre
A new Vantage XU1 in our workshop, 255/35R20.
Hilo Vantage XU1 tyre
The Vantage XU1. Fine pattern inside, big blocks outside.

For the performance car on 19 and 20 inch wheels. The asymmetric tread puts a fine pattern on the inside for grip and big blocks on the outside to keep as much rubber on the road as possible in a corner. It is built stiff across and flexible along, for sharp steering and a comfortable ride, and its carbon polymer compound adds traction while it cuts rolling resistance. W and Y rated. Graded 480 A A, half as much again as the median of 320 for the low profile tyres we inspect. Four sizes, 19 and 20 inch.

See the Vantage XU1 range: 4 sizes

Sport XV1: the SUV highway tyre

Hilo Sport XV1 tyre
The Sport XV1. The SUV highway tyre.
Hilo Sport XV1 tyre
Graded 520 A A. Quiet, symmetric, easy rolling.

For the SUV that does its kilometres on the highway. Four grooves and a wide contact patch clear water and keep the steering precise, dense zigzag sipes lock the blocks together for stability, an optimised pitch keeps the cabin quiet, and a carbon polymer compound rolls easily for less fuel. Graded 520 A A, 30% above the median of 400 for the tyres we inspect. Three sizes, 17 to 20 inch.

See the Sport XV1 range: 3 sizes

X-Terrain MT1: the mud terrain

Hilo X-Terrain MT1 tyre
The X-Terrain MT1. Made for mud.
Hilo X-Terrain MT1 tyre
Built for tough ground. Symmetric and open.

Made for mud, sand and rutted tracks. The tread is deep and open, laid out to grip on tough ground and clear the mud from between the blocks, and symmetric, so it can go on any corner. Light truck construction: 6 ply on the 32 and 33 inch flotation sizes and 10 ply on the metric sizes. Five sizes, 15 to 17 inch.

See the X-Terrain MT1 range: 5 sizes

X-Terrain XT1: the all terrain

Hilo X-Terrain XT1 tyre
The X-Terrain XT1. Curved grooves that clean themselves out, on a 10 ply build.

For the ute that works on the seal all week and heads off it at the weekend. Four curved grooves grip and clean themselves out on mud and gravel, a wide open shoulder gives it bite and stability when braking, zigzag sipes grip and smooth the ride, and a strong carcass with a convex sidewall stands up to wear. Built as a 10 ply light truck tyre. One size, 285/75R16.

Brawn XC1: the van tyre

Hilo Brawn XC1 tyre
The Brawn XC1. An 8 ply van tyre with closed shoulders.

Built for the working van. Three grooves drain the water, zigzag edges grip, and big centre blocks with closed shoulders keep it steady under load and help it last. An 8 ply commercial construction carries the weight. One size, 165R14.

The grading, and what it proves

520treadwear on the Sport XV1, against a median of 400 for the tyres we inspect
480treadwear on the Vantage XU1, against a median of 320 for the low profile tyres we inspect
Atraction and temperature on every UTQG graded size

Treadwear grades across the car range run from 420 on the Genesys XP1 to 520 on the Sport XV1, every one of them above the median of 400 for the tyres we inspect, with traction A and temperature A throughout. Our own workshop records set those medians, and our low profile tyre guide explains where they come from. The light truck and van sizes are not graded under UTQG; their proof is the construction, up to 10 ply.

EU tyre label on a Hilo Vantage XU1
The label on a new Vantage XU1, 255/35R20: fuel C, wet grip B, 73 dB. The number on it ties it to its entry in the EU registry.

Every car size also carries an EU label, graded for fuel efficiency, wet grip and noise. Hilo registers most sizes in the EU registry more than once, and the grades can move by a letter from one entry to the next, so the range table above gives every grade on record, and the label on the tyre gives the grades for that tyre.

The brand

Who makes Hilo tyres?

Xingyuan, in Shandong, China, the maker of our Anchee range. The DOT codes in our workshop records show it: Hilo and Anchee tyres carry the same factory code, 1HK. In the European Union's tyre label registry both brands are registered by the same factory company, Shandong Xinghongyuan Tyre, and Hilo by Xingyuan Tire Group too. We fit Hilo in our own Te Puke workshop.

Are Hilo tyres any good?

The grades say so. The Sport XV1 is graded 520 for treadwear, against a median of 400 for the tyres we inspect, the Vantage XU1 is graded 480 against a median of 320 for low profile tyres, and every UTQG graded size carries traction A and temperature A. And it comes out of the same factory as our Anchee range, which we have imported since 2018.

Which Hilo pattern do I need?

Start with the vehicle. An everyday car on 15 or 16 inch wheels wants the Genesys XP1, a car on 16 or 17 inch driven with some enthusiasm the Green Plus, and a performance car on 19 or 20 inch the Vantage XU1. An SUV that lives on the highway wants the Sport XV1. A ute or 4WD wants the X-Terrain XT1 if it splits its time on and off the seal, or the X-Terrain MT1 if it lives in the mud. A van wants the Brawn XC1. Tell us the vehicle and what it does and we will say which.
Ratings and sizes

What do the EU label grades mean?

The EU label grades a tyre for fuel efficiency, from its rolling resistance, and for wet grip, each from A to E with A the best, and gives the noise it makes outside the car in decibels. Hilo registers most sizes more than once, and the grades can differ by a letter from one entry to the next, so the range table gives every grade on record, read 25 September 2026. The label on your tyre shows the grades for that tyre. New Zealand has no tyre label scheme of its own, which is something we have petitioned Parliament to change.

What do the UTQG grades mean?

Treadwear, traction and temperature, graded in the United States. Treadwear is graded against a reference tyre, so a higher number is built to last longer, and it compares best within a brand. Traction is the wet skid grade: AA is the top, then A, B and C. Temperature is heat resistance, A the best. Our Sport XV1 is 520 A A and the Vantage XU1 is 480 A A. Light truck and van tyres are not graded under UTQG; they are rated on load and ply instead.

What does 6, 8 or 10 ply mean?

A strength grade for the casing, not a count of layers. A higher ply rating carries a heavier load at a higher pressure and resists a stone through the tread, which is what a loaded ute or van needs. Match or beat the load index on your door placard. Our load rating guide explains the numbers and the WOF tyre guide explains why an inspector checks them.

Which way round do they go on?

The Green Plus and Vantage XU1 are asymmetric: the outside face is marked on the sidewall and goes outwards, and once fitted they can still move front to back. The Genesys XP1, Sport XV1, X-Terrain MT1, X-Terrain XT1 and Brawn XC1 treads are symmetric and not directional, so they can go on any corner. Our tread pattern guide shows the types.

Can you fit them for me?

Yes. Every size has a fitted and balanced option at our Te Puke workshop. Choose it on the tyre's own page, then book a time online.

Hilo or Anchee?

They come out of the same factory, so pick by size and pattern. Anchee covers the widest spread of car, SUV and light truck sizes we hold. Hilo brings patterns of its own, such as the Vantage XU1 on 19 and 20 inch wheels and the X-Terrain MT1 in 32 and 33 inch sizes. Where your size comes in both, the Anchee range is a click away.
