The short answer

The New Mutant X-MT is Predator's mud terrain, in 6 sizes on 17 and 20 inch wheels. The most aggressive tread we sell, for mud, rock and the trucks that work hardest.

  • 10 ply on every size, load rated up to 1,500 kg per tyre.
  • Wide gaps between big blocks, so mud, sand and stones clear out as the tyre turns.
  • Mud and stone ejectors in the grooves, to push stones out before they drill in.
  • Two sidewalls on one tyre, one blocked and one spiked, for grip and armour in the ruts.
  • Mostly on the seal? The New Mutant X-AT is the all terrain in the same family.

What the X-MT is built to do

Keep a heavy truck moving where the ground gives way: deep mud, loose rock, sand and clay.

Off road, a tyre is only as good as its ability to clean itself. The X-MT is built around big, deep blocks with wide gaps between them, so each turn of the wheel throws the mud, sand and stones back out and the blocks come round clean to bite again. Staggered shoulder lugs step in and out of the tread edge to grip rock ledges and the walls of a rut, mud and stone ejectors push stones out of the grooves before they can drill in, and every size is 10 ply, for the load and for the punctures. It comes in 265/70R17 121/118Q, 285/70R17 121/118Q, 33/12.5R17 120Q, 275/55R20 120/117Q, 285/55R20 122/119Q and 33/12.5R20 114Q.

How the X-MT works

Every part of the X-MT has a job to do. Here is what each one does for you, in the mud and on the way there.

Room for the mud to go

Look at the X-MT's tread and you see as much gap as rubber. That high void ratio is the point: as the wheel turns, mud, sand, snow and loose stones are squeezed out of the gaps instead of packing in, so the blocks come round clean and bite again on every turn. A tyre that clogs becomes a slick; the X-MT is built to keep clearing itself in exactly the conditions where lesser tyres give up.

Stones out, not in

Small raised ridges sit in the bottom of the X-MT's grooves. They are mud and stone ejectors, and their job is to lift a stone out of the groove before the weight of the truck can drill it down into the tread. On a metal road or a riverbed that is the difference between a tyre that wears evenly and one that is slowly holed from the inside out.

Bite on rock and in the ruts

The shoulder lugs are staggered, stepping in and out of the tread edge at different depths, so there is always an edge ready to catch a rock ledge or the wall of a rut. Deep cuts across the blocks add more edges again, for grip on wet rock, clay and snow. The X pattern down the middle ties it together, driving the truck forward whichever way the ground is breaking.

Two sidewalls, one tyre

The X-MT is moulded with a different pattern on each side, one blocked and one spiked, which Predator calls the X-TREME SPIKE. Choose which face turns out and the truck looks the way you want it. Both do real work off the seal: when you air down in soft sand or a deep rut, the sidewall touches the ground, and those blocks grip and take the scrapes that would otherwise cut the casing.

Built to carry

Every X-MT we sell is 10 ply light truck construction. That rating is how much load the casing takes at pressure, which is what a loaded tray, a canopy, a bull bar or a trailer need under them. Across the range the load index runs to 122, or 1,500 kilograms a tyre, and the stiff casing is what stops a stick or a stone pushing through the sidewall on a bush track.

Better on the road than it looks

Predator gives the X-MT a three pitch tread: the blocks come in three lengths, set in a sequence that breaks up the sound and the vibration instead of stacking them into one drone at open road speed. The deep cuts across the blocks help too, adding edges for braking on a wet road. It is still a mud terrain, but it is one you can drive to work on the way to the track.

Where the X-MT fits and where it does not

Good for

  • Utes, 4WDs and lifted trucks on 17 and 20 inch wheels that go properly off road
  • Deep mud, clay, sand and loose rock
  • Heavy loads and trailers, with 10 ply on every size
  • Farm tracks, riverbeds and bush roads that cut lesser tyres

Airing down Letting some air out off road widens the footprint and adds grip in sand and mud, and the X-MT's sidewall blocks are built for it. Pump back up before you get back on the seal. Our tyre pressure guide explains why the pressure matters, and the 4WD tyre hub covers the trade offs between the types.
Is it the right tyre

What is a mud terrain tyre?

The most off road of the tyre types: big tread blocks with wide gaps between them, so mud, stones and sand clear out as the tyre turns and the blocks keep finding something to bite. The trade is on the seal, where a mud terrain is louder and less sharp than an all terrain. It suits a vehicle that spends real time off the road, and the heavier it works, the more it suits. Our mud terrain guide covers the choice in full.

Is the New Mutant X-MT any good?

Yes. It is the most aggressive tread in Predator's line up and the one we sell for the hardest work. Every size is 10 ply light truck construction, load rated up to 1,500 kg per tyre, with mud and stone ejectors in the grooves and a spiked, armoured sidewall on one face. We import Predator ourselves and fit the X-MT in our own Te Puke workshop.

Will it be loud on the road?

It is a mud terrain, so it hums more than a highway tyre, but Predator builds the X-MT with a three pitch tread: the blocks come in three lengths, set in a pattern that breaks up the sound and the vibration instead of stacking them into one drone. For a truck that is on the seal most of the week, the New Mutant X-AT is the quieter choice.
Ratings and sizes

What does 10 ply mean?

It is a strength grade for the casing, not a count of layers. A 10 ply light truck tyre carries a heavier load at a higher pressure and stands up far better to a stone or a stick through the sidewall, which is what a mud tyre on a working truck needs. Every X-MT we sell is 10 ply. Our load rating guide explains the numbers.

What load and speed rating do I need?

Match or beat the figures on your door placard, and take the load seriously if you tow or carry. Across the X-MT the load index runs from 114 to 122, which is 1,180 kg to 1,500 kg per tyre, and every size is speed rated Q, which is 160 km/h. Our towing load calculator works out what you need behind a loaded trailer, and the WOF tyre guide covers what an inspector checks.

Which sidewall faces out?

Whichever you like. The X-MT is moulded with a different pattern on each sidewall, one blocked and one spiked, so the same tyre gives you two looks. Say which face you want when you order and we fit all four the same way. The tread is symmetrical and not directional, so a tyre can go on any corner and be rotated front to back or across the truck. Our tread pattern guide shows how to tell the types apart.
Buying

X-MT, RT Trail or X-AT?

Go by where the truck spends its time. The X-MT is the mud terrain, for mud, rock and the heaviest work. The RT Trail is the rugged terrain, a step quieter, for a truck that tows and still goes bush. The X-AT is the all terrain, for the week on the seal with gravel and tracks at the weekend. Tell us the vehicle and what it does and we will say which.

Can you fit them for me?

Yes. Every size has a fitted and balanced option at our Te Puke workshop, and big mud tyres are worth balancing properly. Choose it on the tyre's own page, then book a time online.

Who makes Predator tyres?

Predator is an American tyre brand from Transamerica Tire in Memphis, Tennessee, designed in the United States and built in factories across Southeast Asia. The New Mutant family is its off road range, and the X-MT is the most aggressive tyre in it. We import Predator ourselves, and the whole range is on our Predator page.
Where these figures come from
  • Sizes, load indices, speed ratings and ply ratings: our own listings for the 6 X-MT sizes, read 24 September 2026, each matched against Predator's own X-MT size and specification table
  • Load in kilograms and speed in km/h: the standard load index and speed symbol tables
  • The tread design, the ejectors, the three pitch tread and the dual sidewall: Predator's New Mutant X-MT page, and the tyre itself, pictured above
  • Designed in the United States, built in Southeast Asia: Predator Tires' about page; Transamerica Tire of Memphis is named on its posters

Light truck tyres are not graded under UTQG, which is why no treadwear grade appears on this page. They are rated on load and ply instead.
