The short answer

The Comptrax H/T is Predator's highway tyre for utes, SUVs and light trucks, in nine sizes from 16 to 20 inch. Quiet, long wearing and steady, for the truck that spends the week on the seal.

  • Treadwear 600 on every graded size, against a median of 400 for the tyres we inspect.
  • An A for traction on every graded size, from a braking test on a wet road.
  • Four straight grooves and sipes across every block, for the wet.
  • Three 10 ply light truck sizes for utes that tow and carry.
  • Going off road at the weekend? The New Mutant X-AT is the all terrain in the same brand.

What the Comptrax H/T is built to do

Make the everyday miles easy: quiet on the motorway, sure in the wet, and slow to wear.

Most utes and SUVs spend nearly all their time on the seal, and a highway tyre is built for exactly that. The Comptrax H/T runs a closed, ribbed tread: five ribs separated by four straight grooves that run right around the tyre, so there is plenty of rubber on the road for grip and quiet, and a clear path for water to escape. Zig-zag sipes cut across every block for extra biting edges in the wet. The tread is symmetrical, so it wears evenly and rotates to any corner. It comes in nine sizes from 16 to 20 inch, three of them 10 ply light truck sizes.

Match the load index on your door placard before you order, and keep both tyres on an axle the same.

How the Comptrax H/T works

Every part of the H/T has a job to do. Here is what each one does for you on the road.

Four grooves for the wet

Four straight grooves run right around the Comptrax H/T, and each one is a channel that carries water out from under the tread at speed. That keeps the ribs pressed onto the road instead of riding up on a film of water, which is what makes a tyre aquaplane. On a wet motorway at 100 km/h, that open path for the water is the difference between steady and sliding.

Edges for braking

Look closely at the H/T's ribs and every block is cut across with fine zig-zag sipes. Each sipe is an extra edge, and each opens a little as the block flexes to wipe water off the road and grip. The zig-zag shape keeps the block stiff enough to steer precisely while still giving it far more edges to hold with when you brake hard on a wet road.

Tread that lasts

Every graded Comptrax H/T size scores 600 for treadwear, against a median of 400 for the tyres we inspect in our workshop, and an A for traction on a wet road. The symmetrical tread wears evenly across its width and can move to any corner of the truck, so rotating the set every ten thousand kilometres or so spreads the wear and gets the full life out of all four.

Built for the weight

Utes and SUVs are heavier than cars, and they carry and tow. The H/T's passenger sizes are load rated for that, and three of the sizes are 10 ply light truck construction, load rated up to 1,450 kg a tyre, with the tough casing a loaded tray or a trailer needs. Match the load index on your door placard, and take the light truck size if you tow.

Where the Comptrax H/T fits and where it does not

Good for

  • Utes, SUVs and light trucks on 16 to 20 inch wheels that live on the seal
  • Long motorway miles, where a quiet, long wearing tyre pays for itself
  • Wet roads, with four grooves and sipes across every block
  • Towing and carrying, on the 10 ply light truck sizes

Is it the right tyre

What is a highway terrain tyre?

The road tyre of the 4WD world. It is built for a ute, SUV or light truck that spends almost all its time on the seal: a closed, ribbed tread that stays quiet and wears slowly, grooves and sipes for the wet, and a casing built for the weight of a bigger vehicle. It takes a gravel road in its stride, but it is not made for mud or rock. Our highway terrain guide covers the choice in full.

Is the Comptrax H/T any good?

Yes, and the grading shows it. Every graded size scores 600 for treadwear, against a median of 400 for the tyres we inspect in our workshop, with an A for traction from a braking test on a wet road. The light truck sizes are 10 ply, for utes that tow and carry. We import Predator ourselves and fit the H/T in our own Te Puke workshop.

Can it handle a gravel road?

Yes. Metal roads, farm drives and the road to the bach are all well within a highway tyre's reach, and the 10 ply sizes add a tougher casing against stones. Where it stops is proper off road work: mud, rock and deep ruts. If the truck goes there often, the New Mutant X-AT is the better tyre.
Ratings and sizes

What does 600 A A mean?

It is the Uniform Tire Quality Grade, moulded into the sidewall of tyres sold in the United States. 600 is treadwear, graded against a reference tyre: the higher the number, the longer the tread is built to last. The first letter is traction, from a braking test on a wet road, graded AA, A, B or C. The second is temperature, the tyre's resistance to heat at speed. Five of the graded H/T sizes are 600 A A and one is 600 A B.

What does 10 ply mean on the light truck sizes?

It is a strength grade for the casing, not a count of layers. A 10 ply light truck tyre carries a heavier load at a higher pressure and stands up better to a stone through the sidewall. Three H/T sizes are 10 ply: 215/85R16 115/112Q, 235/65R16 121/119R and 235/85R16 120/116Q. Our load rating guide explains the numbers.

What load and speed rating do I need?

Match or beat the figures on your door placard. Across the H/T the load index runs from 99 to 121, which is 775 kg to 1,450 kg per tyre, and the speed ratings are Q (160 km/h), R (170 km/h), T (190 km/h) and H (210 km/h). If you tow, our towing load calculator works out what you need, and the WOF tyre guide covers what an inspector checks.
Buying

Comptrax H/T or New Mutant X-AT?

Go by how often the truck leaves the seal. The H/T is the highway tyre: the quietest, the longest wearing, and the right choice if you rarely go further off road than a gravel drive. The X-AT is the all terrain, snowflake rated, for a truck that does tracks and beaches at the weekend. Tell us what the vehicle does and we will say which.

Can you fit them for me?

Yes. Every size has a fitted and balanced option at our Te Puke workshop. Choose it on the tyre's own page, then book a time online.

Who makes Predator tyres?

Predator is an American tyre brand from Transamerica Tire in Memphis, Tennessee, designed in the United States and built in factories across Southeast Asia. The Comptrax family is its road range, and the H/T is the one built for utes and SUVs. We import Predator ourselves, and the whole range is on our Predator page.

  • Load in kilograms and speed in km/h: the standard load index and speed symbol tables
  • Median treadwear of 400: our own workshop inspection records, published in the low profile tyre guide
  • The ribs, the grooves, the sipes and the symmetrical pattern: the tyre itself, pictured above
  • What the UTQG grades measure: the United States Uniform Tire Quality Grading standard, 49 CFR 575.104

UTQG is a United States grading scheme. New Zealand has no tyre grading scheme of its own, so the grades above are context rather than a local standard.
