What the AC818 is built to do

A high performance road tyre for sports sedans, hot hatches and performance imports on low profile wheels.

The AC818 is built to be driven hard and driven every day. Its asymmetric tread gives you stable cornering and confident braking in the wet, 40 of the 42 sizes are W or Y speed rated, and a treadwear grade of 480 means it keeps performing long after a softer tyre has worn out. It comes in sizes from 16 to 21 inch.

How the AC818 tread works

Every part of the AC818's tread has a job to do. Here is what each one does for you on the road.

Grip in the corners

The Anchee AC818 runs a different tread on each half of the tyre, so each half can do its own job properly. Turn into a corner and the weight of the car rolls onto the outside shoulder, which is built from large, solid blocks that hold their shape and keep more rubber on the road. The inside half is cut much finer, giving you many more edges that bite when you brake and accelerate. The result is a tyre that feels planted when you push on and sure footed when you need to stop.

Grip in the wet

Wet roads are where a performance tyre earns its keep, and the AC818 is built for them. Four wide grooves run right around the tyre and clear water straight out from under the tread, while fine cuts across every rib break up the thin film that is left, so the rubber stays in contact with the road. It shows where it counts. On the European label, which measures braking on a wet road, 40 of the 42 sizes score a B, one step off the very top grade.

Long wear, easy rolling

The AC818's tread compound is blended with silica, the same technology the premium brands use to make a tyre roll more easily and last longer. Less energy is lost as heat every time the tread flexes, which means lower rolling resistance, a cooler running tyre and a tread that wears slowly. The proof is in the grading: a treadwear rating of 480, against a median of 320 for the low profile tyres that come through our workshop. That is performance you do not have to replace in a hurry.

A quiet, comfortable ride

A performance tyre does not have to be a noisy one. Most tyre noise comes from the tread blocks meeting the road thousands of times a minute, so the AC818's blocks are shaped to give slightly as they land, softening each impact before it reaches the cabin. The blocks and grooves are laid out to keep that noise low and the ride smooth, on the motorway and around town. It measures 71 to 72 decibels on the European label.

How the AC818 is graded

Every one of the 42 AC818 sizes carries the same UTQG grade: 480 for treadwear, A for traction and A for temperature. A is the highest temperature grade there is.

The treadwear number is the standout. The median for the low profile tyres that come through our workshop is 320, and nearly half of them are graded 300 or below, because most tyres in these sizes are built soft for grip and graded accordingly. At 480 the AC818 is graded half as high again. The full numbers are in our low profile tyre guide.

On speed, 34 of the 42 sizes are W rated (270 km/h), six are Y (300 km/h) and two are V (240 km/h). 30 are XL for extra load, and the load index runs from 84 to 108, which is 500 kg to 1,000 kg per tyre.

Read the label for your size, not for the pattern

Almost every AC818 size grades C for fuel, B for wet grip and 72 decibels on the European label. A few differ. The 195/45R16 grades D and C, the 205/50R17 grades C and C, and three sizes measure 71 decibels: 215/55R17 94W, 235/45R18 94W and 235/50R18 97W.

Identical tread pattern, different casing, different result. That is why every rating on our product pages sits against the size you are buying and never against the pattern name.

Is it the right tyre

Is the Anchee AC818 any good?

Yes, and the grading backs it up. Every AC818 carries a UTQG grade of 480 A A, 40 of the 42 sizes score a B for wet grip on the European label, one step off the top grade, and 40 of the 42 are W or Y speed rated. It comes with a five year manufacturer warranty, from a factory with more than ten years of experience building tyres for Yokohama. We have been the sole New Zealand importer of Anchee since 2018, and we fit the AC818 in our own workshop.

Who is the AC818 not for?

It is a road tyre for cars, and that is what it does best. For an SUV or crossover choose the AC828, which carries the load ratings a heavier vehicle needs. For a ute, gravel or farm tracks choose the AC858 all terrain. And if you want a tyre purely for track days, a soft track compound will suit you better, because the AC818 is built to last.

How long will it last?

Longer than most tyres in these sizes. The AC818 is graded 480 for treadwear. The median for the low profile tyres we inspect in our workshop is 320, and nearly half of them are graded 300 or below, so the AC818 starts well ahead. How far it goes on your car comes down to pressures, alignment and how you drive, so keep those right and it will look after you. There is more in our low profile tyre guide.
Ratings and sizes

What do the W and Y speed ratings mean?

The letter is the top speed the tyre is built and tested for. V is 240 km/h, W is 270 km/h and Y is 300 km/h. Of the 42 sizes in the range, 34 are W, six are Y and two are V. None of those is a speed you will legally see in New Zealand. What the letter tells you is how strongly the tyre is built: a W or Y rating means a casing engineered to stay stable and cool at very high speed, which is exactly what you want under a performance car. Why do most sizes say XL?

XL means extra load: a reinforced tyre that carries more weight at a higher pressure. 30 of the 42 AC818 sizes are XL. Across the range the load index runs from 84 to 108, which is 500 kg to 1,000 kg per tyre. Match or beat the load index on your door placard, and keep the pressure up to suit an XL tyre. Why is the label different on some sizes?

Because the European label is measured size by size, not pattern by pattern. Almost every AC818 size grades C for fuel, B for wet grip and 72 decibels. The 195/45R16 grades D and C, the 205/50R17 grades C and C, and three sizes measure 71 decibels. Same tread, different casing, different result. That is why the grades on our product pages sit against the size you are buying. New Zealand has no tyre label scheme of its own, which is something we have petitioned Parliament to change.

Is it directional? Which way round does it go?

It is not directional. It is asymmetric, which means the inside and outside halves of the tread are different, and the tyre goes on with its marked outside face outwards. Because it is not directional a tyre can move to either side of the car, which keeps rotation simple. Our tread pattern guide shows how to tell the types apart.
Buying

Can you fit them for me?

Yes. Every size has a fitted and balanced option at our Te Puke workshop. Choose it on the tyre's own page, then book a time online. If you are further away we deliver, and any tyre shop can fit them.

What warranty does it carry?

A five year manufacturer warranty against defects in materials and workmanship, backed by us as the New Zealand importer. Normal wear and road hazard damage are not covered.

Who makes Anchee tyres?

Anchee tyres are made by Xingyuan, which the China Rubber Industry Association ranks seventh among Chinese tyre makers, and which has more than ten years of experience building tyres for Yokohama. We have been the sole New Zealand importer since 2018. There is more on our Anchee page.
