What the AC808 is built to do

An everyday tyre for the cars New Zealand actually drives: Corollas, Swifts, Mazda 3s, Jazzes and everything like them.

The AC808 is built for the daily run: school, work, the supermarket, the odd trip up the line. That means four straight grooves to clear the rain, a fine symmetric tread that stays quiet on chip seal, a silica compound that rolls easily and wears slowly, and a cut resistant tread that shrugs off the potholes. It comes in 33 sizes from 13 to 16 inch, which covers most of the cars on the road.

The everyday one The AC808 is the Anchee for a car that does ordinary miles on ordinary wheels. If your car runs a low profile performance size, the AC818 is built for that, with W and Y speed ratings and a treadwear grade of 480. If it is an SUV or crossover, the AC828 carries the load ratings a heavier vehicle needs.

How the AC808 tread works

Every part of the AC808's tread has a job to do. Here is what each one does for you on the road.

Quiet on chip seal

Most tyre noise is the tread blocks meeting the road, thousands of times a minute, and New Zealand's coarse chip seal makes every tyre louder. The AC808's blocks are cut in a mix of lengths and set in a tuned order, so the sound they make is spread across many notes instead of building into one drone, and its fine pattern lands softly. On the European label the AC808 measures 70 to 72 decibels, and 30 of its 32 labelled sizes come in under the median of 72 decibels across every tyre we list, which makes it one of the quietest tyres we sell.

Grip in the wet

Four straight grooves run right around the AC808 and give the water under the tyre the shortest path out. The ribs between them are cut with fine sipes, matched to the steel belts underneath, that open into hundreds of extra edges to bite on a wet road. That is what you feel as a car that stops straight and steers cleanly in the rain. It shows on the label too: 20 of the 32 labelled sizes score a B for wet grip, one step off the very top grade.

Easy rolling, lower fuel bills

The AC808's compound is blended with silica, which lets the tread flex without wasting energy as heat. Less energy lost each turn of the wheel means lower rolling resistance, and Anchee has tuned the tread construction, the pattern and the rubber together to keep it that way. On a car that does a lot of short trips, that is a difference you see at the pump over the life of the set.

Slow, even wear

The same silica formula sets the stiffness of the tread, so the blocks wear slowly instead of scrubbing, and a cut resistant compound resists the nicks and chunks that turn into uneven wear on rough roads. The proof is in the grading: a treadwear rating of 420, right on the median of 400 for the tyres that come through our workshop. Rotate the set every service and it will wear out evenly, all four together.

How the AC808 is graded

Every graded AC808 size carries the same UTQG grade: 420 for treadwear, A for traction and A for temperature. A is the highest temperature grade there is. The one size without a grade on its page, the 155/80R13, is the smallest in the range.

On treadwear the AC808 sits right on the median of 400 for the tyres that come through our workshop, low profiles aside, which is exactly where an everyday tyre should be: not a soft grip first compound that is gone in two years, and not a hard one that gives up wet grip to get there. On speed, 10 are T rated (190 km/h), 15 are H rated (210 km/h) and 8 are V rated (240 km/h). On load, the index runs from 79 to 98, which is 435 kg to 750 kg per tyre, and two sizes are XL for extra load.

Read the label for your size, not for the pattern

Across the 32 AC808 sizes with a European label, 20 grade B for wet grip, 11 grade C, and the 175/70R14 grades E. Fuel is C or D depending on the size, and noise runs from 70 to 72 decibels.

Is it the right tyre

Is the Anchee AC808 any good?

Yes, and the grading backs it up. Every graded AC808 size carries a UTQG grade of 420 A A, 20 of the 32 sizes with a European label score a B for wet grip, one step off the top grade, and the range measures 70 to 72 decibels, which is quiet for any tyre. It comes with a five year manufacturer warranty, from a factory with more than ten years of experience building tyres for Yokohama. We have been the sole New Zealand importer of Anchee since 2018, and we fit the AC808 in our own workshop.

Who is the AC808 not for?

It is an everyday car tyre, and that is what it does best. If your car runs a low profile performance size on 16 to 21 inch wheels, the AC818 is the Anchee built for that. For an SUV or crossover choose the AC828, which carries the load ratings a heavier vehicle needs, and for a van or trailer choose the AC838.

How long will it last?

As long as the tyres it replaces, and often longer. The AC808 is graded 420 for treadwear, right on the median of 400 for the tyres we inspect in our workshop, and its compound is built for slow, even wear rather than for lap times. One owner reports 50,000 km from a set. How far yours go comes down to pressures, alignment and rotation, so keep those right and the AC808 will look after you. Ratings and sizes

What do the T, H and V speed ratings mean?

The letter is the top speed the tyre is built and tested for: T is 190 km/h, H is 210 km/h and V is 240 km/h. Across the AC808 range 10 are T rated (190 km/h), 15 are H rated (210 km/h) and 8 are V rated (240 km/h). None of those is a speed you will legally see in New Zealand. Match or beat the letter on your door placard, and if your placard says H, buy H or V. Our speed rating guide covers how to choose.

What load rating do I need?

Match or beat the load index on your door placard. Across the AC808 range the load index runs from 79 to 98, which is 435 kg to 750 kg per tyre, and two sizes are XL for extra load. On a small car that is rarely the deciding number, but it is worth a look before you buy. Our load rating guide explains it.

What pressure should I run?

Start with the placard on the door, then add a couple of PSI and watch the wear. Placard figures are set for a lightly loaded car and weighted to ride comfort, and tyres lose one to two PSI a month anyway, so a little above the placard is where most cars run best. Never go above the maximum moulded on the sidewall. Our tyre pressure guide explains why, and the pressure calculator will work it out for your car.

Why is the label different on some sizes?

Because the European label is measured size by size, not pattern by pattern. Most AC808 sizes grade B for wet grip, a group grade C, and the 175/70R14 grades E. Fuel is C or D depending on the size, and noise runs from 70 to 72 decibels. Same tread, different casing, different result. That is why the grades on our product pages sit against the size you are buying. New Zealand has no tyre label scheme of its own, which is something we have petitioned Parliament to change.

Is it directional? Which way round does it go?

No. The AC808 is symmetric and not directional, so it can be fitted either way round and rotated to any corner of the car. That keeps rotation simple and the wear even across the set. Our tread pattern guide shows how to tell the types apart.
Buying

Can you fit them for me?

Yes. Every size has a fitted and balanced option at our Te Puke workshop. Choose it on the tyre's own page, then book a time online. If you are further away we deliver, and any tyre shop can fit them.

What warranty does it carry?

A five year manufacturer warranty against defects in materials and workmanship, backed by us as the New Zealand importer. Normal wear and road hazard damage are not covered.

Who makes Anchee tyres?

Anchee tyres are made by Xingyuan, which the China Rubber Industry Association ranks seventh among Chinese tyre makers, and which has more than ten years of experience building tyres for Yokohama. We have been the sole New Zealand importer since 2018. There is more on our Anchee page.
