Tyre Load Rating Chart — NZ Guide
The number before the speed letter in your tyre size is your load index — the maximum weight each tyre can carry. Some tyres show one number (single), others show two (single/dual). This is the quick-reference chart — for XL vs LT, ply ratings, and upgrade advice see the full load rating guide.
📍 Where to Find Your Load Index
It's the number(s) right before the speed rating letter on your tyre sidewall:
= 615 kg per tyre
Single: 1,120 kg · Dual: 1,060 kg

❓ What Does XL Mean on a Tyre?
You'll see XL (Extra Load) or RF (Reinforced) on some tyres — e.g. 225/45R17 94W XL. These are passenger-construction tyres with reinforced sidewalls that achieve a higher load index than standard tyres of the same size.
The catch: XL tyres only reach their rated capacity at higher inflation pressures (typically 2.5–2.9 bar vs 2.2–2.5 bar for standard). If you inflate an XL tyre to standard pressure, it carries no more than a standard tyre. Always check the pressure placard or the tyre's load/pressure table.
XL is not the same as LT. XL tyres use passenger construction (softer ride, lighter). LT (Light Truck) tyres are purpose-built with more plies (6, 8, 10, or 12-ply) for sustained heavy loads — utes, vans, towing. For the full breakdown, see the full load rating guide.
