Tyre Load Rating Chart — NZ Guide

The number before the speed letter in your tyre size is your load index — the maximum weight each tyre can carry. Some tyres show one number (single), others show two (single/dual). This is the quick-reference chart — for XL vs LT, ply ratings, and upgrade advice see the full load rating guide.

📍 Where to Find Your Load Index

It's the number(s) right before the speed rating letter on your tyre sidewall:

🔴 Single Load Index
205/55R16Size
91Load
HSpeed

= 615 kg per tyre

🟢 Dual Load Index
265/65R17Size
112Single
/
110Dual
SSpeed

Single: 1,120 kg · Dual: 1,060 kg

ℹ️ When do you see two numbers? Tyres rated for heavier loads often show a dual index (e.g. 112/110). The first number is the capacity with one tyre per side (most vehicles). The second is for two tyres per side on the rear axle — lower because reduced airflow means more heat. If your tyre shows one number, it's single fitment only.

Family SUVs & crossovers 91–99 615–775 RAV4, CX-5, Outlander, X-Trail
Large SUVs & 4WDs 104–112 900–1,120 Prado, Patrol, Pajero Sport, Fortuner

Vans & heavy commercial 121–129 1,450–1,850 HiAce, Sprinter, NV350, larger trucks
ℹ️ Always check your door placard: These are typical ranges — your specific vehicle may differ. The exact minimum load index for your vehicle is printed on the tyre placard inside the driver's door jamb, alongside the recommended tyre pressure.

❓ What Does XL Mean on a Tyre?

You'll see XL (Extra Load) or RF (Reinforced) on some tyres — e.g. 225/45R17 94W XL. These are passenger-construction tyres with reinforced sidewalls that achieve a higher load index than standard tyres of the same size.

The catch: XL tyres only reach their rated capacity at higher inflation pressures (typically 2.5–2.9 bar vs 2.2–2.5 bar for standard). If you inflate an XL tyre to standard pressure, it carries no more than a standard tyre. Always check the pressure placard or the tyre's load/pressure table.

XL is not the same as LT. XL tyres use passenger construction (softer ride, lighter). LT (Light Truck) tyres are purpose-built with more plies (6, 8, 10, or 12-ply) for sustained heavy loads — utes, vans, towing. For the full breakdown, see the full load rating guide.

📋 Key Rules

✅ Quick calculation: Load index × 4 tyres = total vehicle support. Example: index 95 → 690 × 4 = 2,760 kg. This must meet or exceed your vehicle's GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) on the compliance plate. Need help calculating? The full guide walks through it step by step.
⚠️ WOF Rule — Same-axle matching required: Load indices on the same axle must be within 3 points of each other. A 95 and 97 together is fine — a 91 and 99 will fail WOF. Both must also meet or exceed the vehicle manufacturer's minimum.

This Is the Quick-Reference Chart

Need load indices below 88 or above 120? Want to understand XL vs LT, HL (High Load) for EVs, ply ratings, or how to calculate if your tyres support your GVM? The full guide covers it all.
