What the AC828 is built to do

A highway tyre for SUVs, crossovers and 4WDs that spend their life on sealed roads.

Most of the driving an SUV does is on sealed roads, and the AC828 is built for exactly that. Four wide grooves clear the water, a tightly packed symmetric tread keeps a tall, heavy vehicle steady, and the pattern is tuned to stay quiet at open road speed. A treadwear grade of 520 means it keeps doing all three for a long time. It comes in sizes from 15 to 20 inch.

How the AC828 tread works

Every part of the AC828's tread has a job to do. Here is what each one does for you on the road.

Grip in the wet

Wet grip starts with getting water out of the way. Four wide grooves run right around the AC828 and carry water straight out from under the tread, while the wide, flat contact patch keeps plenty of rubber on the road once it has gone. That matters more on an SUV, which has more weight to stop. It shows where it counts. On the European label, which measures braking on a wet road, every AC828 size that carries a label scores a B, one step off the very top grade.

Steady under a tall vehicle

An SUV sits higher and weighs more than a car, so its tyres work harder every time you turn or change lanes. The AC828's tread is packed with zigzag cuts running both along and across the tyre. Under load they lock the blocks against each other, which keeps the tread firm and the vehicle steady, and their many edges bite into the road when it is wet or greasy. The result is an SUV that feels planted on the open road and predictable in a corner.

Quiet on the open road

A tyre hums when its tread blocks all hit the road to the same beat. The AC828's blocks are cut in a mix of lengths and set in a tuned order, so the sound they make is spread across many notes instead of building into one drone. Add a tread profile shaped to roll smoothly and you get a cabin that stays calm at 100 km/h, which is what you want on a long trip with the family on board. It measures 70 to 75 decibels on the European label, and 71 on most sizes.

Long wear, easy rolling

The AC828's compound is built to do two jobs that usually pull against each other: grip the road and roll easily. Less energy lost as the tread flexes means lower rolling resistance and a cooler running tyre, and a cooler tyre wears more slowly. The proof is in the grading: a treadwear rating of 520, against a median of 400 for the tyres that come through our workshop, low profiles aside. On a heavy vehicle that is hard on tyres, that is money back in your pocket.

How the AC828 is graded

Every one of the 29 AC828 sizes carries the same UTQG grade: 520 for treadwear, A for traction and A for temperature. A is the highest temperature grade there is.

The treadwear number is the standout. The median for the tyres that come through our workshop, low profiles aside, is 400. At 520 the AC828 is graded 30% higher. The full numbers are in our low profile tyre guide.

On speed, 19 of the 29 sizes are H rated (210 km/h), three are V (240 km/h), five are W (270 km/h) and two are Y (300 km/h). On load, the index runs from 96 to 116, which is 710 kg to 1,250 kg per tyre, and seven sizes are XL for extra load.

Read the label for your size, not for the pattern

Every AC828 size that carries a European label grades C for fuel and B for wet grip. Noise runs from 70 to 75 decibels depending on the size, with most at 71. Two sizes, the 215/55R18 and 265/65R17, have no European label on file, so their pages show none.

Identical tread pattern, different casing, different result. That is why every rating on our product pages sits against the size you are buying and never against the pattern name.

Is it the right tyre

Is the Anchee AC828 any good?

Yes, and the grading backs it up. Every AC828 carries a UTQG grade of 520 A A, every size with a European label scores a B for wet grip, one step off the top grade, and the load ratings are built for SUVs, from 710 kg to 1,250 kg per tyre. It comes with a five year manufacturer warranty, from a factory with more than ten years of experience building tyres for Yokohama. We have been the sole New Zealand importer of Anchee since 2018, and we fit the AC828 in our own workshop.

Who is the AC828 not for?

It is a highway tyre, and that is what it does best. If you spend real time on gravel, farm tracks or the beach, choose the AC858 all terrain. For mud and serious off road work choose the Grandtrac MT1. And if you drive a car on low profile sizes, the AC818 is the Anchee built for that.

How long will it last?

Longer than most. The AC828 is graded 520 for treadwear, and the median for the tyres we inspect in our workshop, low profiles aside, is 400. How far it goes on your vehicle comes down to pressures, alignment and rotation, and an SUV is hard on all three, so keep them right and it will look after you. Ratings and sizes

What pressure should I run in an SUV?

Start with the placard on the door, then add a little. When someone rings us with an ordinary SUV on standard tyres, we generally say 38 to 40 PSI and keep an eye on the tread, even where the placard reads 30 to 34. Shoulders wearing means add more, a centre strip wearing means you have gone too far. Never go above the maximum moulded on the sidewall. What do the speed ratings mean?

The letter is the top speed the tyre is built and tested for. 19 of the 29 sizes are H rated (210 km/h), three are V (240 km/h), five are W (270 km/h) and two are Y (300 km/h). None of those is a speed you will legally see in New Zealand. What the letter tells you is how strongly the tyre is built, and the bigger low profile SUV sizes carry the higher letters as a matter of course. Our speed rating guide covers how to choose.

What load rating do I need?

Match or beat the load index on your door placard. Across the AC828 range the load index runs from 96 to 116, which is 710 kg to 1,250 kg per tyre, and seven sizes are XL for extra load. An SUV, a full boot and a towbar all add up, so this is the number worth checking before you buy. Our load rating guide explains the numbers.

Is it directional? Which way round does it go?

No. The AC828 is symmetric and not directional, so it can be fitted either way round and rotated to any corner of the vehicle, side to side included. That makes it easy to keep the wear even across all four tyres. Our tread pattern guide shows how to tell the types apart.
Buying

Can you fit them for me?

Yes. Every size has a fitted and balanced option at our Te Puke workshop. Choose it on the tyre's own page, then book a time online. If you are further away we deliver, and any tyre shop can fit them.

What warranty does it carry?

A five year manufacturer warranty against defects in materials and workmanship, backed by us as the New Zealand importer. Normal wear and road hazard damage are not covered.

Who makes Anchee tyres?

Anchee tyres are made by Xingyuan, which the China Rubber Industry Association ranks seventh among Chinese tyre makers, and which has more than ten years of experience building tyres for Yokohama. We have been the sole New Zealand importer since 2018. There is more on our Anchee page.
