Who makes Predator, and why we import it

An American brand with a serious off road range, chosen to cover what our other tyres could not.

Predator is designed in the United States and built in factories across Southeast Asia, and its name was made on the light truck side: the New Mutant family of all terrain, rugged terrain and mud terrain tyres, with dual sidewall designs, staggered shoulder lugs and stone ejectors, in the 10 ply light truck sizes a working ute needs. The car side is the Comptrax range, an ultra high performance tyre graded AA for traction and a highway tyre graded 600 for treadwear, and the Radial Classic gives the classic car owner a modern radial with a period sidewall.

We import Predator ourselves. That means the stock is ours, the tyres are fitted and inspected in our own Te Puke workshop, and the grades on these pages get checked against real wear on the hoist rather than taken from a brochure.

UTQG is the American grading of treadwear, traction and temperature. Light truck tyres are not graded under it and are rated on load and ply instead.

New Mutant X-AT: the all terrain

The all terrain for the ute or 4WD that works all week and goes bush at the weekend. A new silica compound gives it long life on the seal and bite off it, deep multi purpose grooves and siping keep it planted on wet road and loose track alike, and staggered shoulder lugs give it an edge on rock. The X tread is cut with pitch variation so it runs quiet on the highway, and the Spike dual sidewall adds strength, puncture resistance and a choice of two looks on one tyre. The proof is in the grading: UTQG 500 A B on 9 of 19, with light truck 10 ply sizes for the loaded tray. 19 sizes, 15 to 22 inch.

New Mutant X-MT: the mud terrain

The most aggressive tyre we sell, built for mud bogs, rock crawling and heavy loads. A high void to lug ratio throws mud, sand and stones clear so the tread is always biting, deep blocks with massive side lugs dig in where a lesser tyre spins, and mud and stone ejectors stop a stone drilling into the casing. Deep siping in the blocks keeps it braking on a wet road, and a variable three pitch tread keeps the noise down on the drive there. Every size is a 10 ply light truck construction. 6 sizes, 17 to 20 inch.

New Mutant RT Trail: the rugged terrain

The hybrid for lifted trucks, tow rigs and work utes: more open than an all terrain, more road manners than a mud terrain. An optimised void to lug ratio self cleans in mud, sand and rock, deep tread gives it hydroplaning resistance and a long life, and staggered shoulder lugs with mud and stone ejectors keep it gripping and clear on a rutted track. The X tread's pitch variation keeps the highway hum down, which matters when the ute tows all week. 10 ply light truck construction on the heavy sizes. 5 sizes, 17 to 20 inch.

Dirt Rebel ATS: the 16 inch ute all terrain

A light truck all terrain in the two 16 inch sizes that half the utes in the country run on. 10 ply construction carries a full tray and a trailer, the all terrain tread takes the farm track and the forestry road in its stride, and it comes in at a price that makes a full set of four an easy decision. If your ute lives on gravel and needs its load rating more than its lap time, this is the one. 2 sizes, 16 inch.

Comptrax H/T: the highway tyre for SUVs and utes

For the SUV, ute or light truck that lives on sealed roads and wants a quiet, long life tyre that can still tow. Four circumferential grooves and sweeping lateral channels clear water, high density siping bites in the wet, a solid outer shoulder zone gives the steering weight and stability at open road speed, and a reinforced construction carries a heavy payload without spoiling the ride. The proof is the treadwear grade: UTQG 600 A A on 5 of 9, against a median of 400 for the tyres that come through our workshop. Light truck 10 ply sizes included. 9 sizes, 16 to 20 inch.

Comptrax PR1: the ultra high performance tyre

Built for the driver who wants the car to turn in sharply and stop short, on wheels up to 24 inch. Three main grooves with curved lateral channels clear water, deep sipes on the inner shoulder and centre blocks interlock under cornering for dry grip and braking, and a solid rib beside the outer shoulder keeps the steering responsive and the car stable in a straight line. The grading is the best in our range: UTQG 560 AA A, and AA is the top traction grade there is. 18 sizes, 16 to 24 inch.

Comptrax PR2: the value performance tyre

The same brief as the PR1, crisp handling and a quiet ride across all seasons, in a tyre priced for the everyday driver of a quick hatch or saloon. An asymmetric tread with a marked outside face, an advanced compound and the Comptrax water clearing layout, graded UTQG 520 AA A, with the same AA traction grade as the PR1. If your size is in both, the PR2 is the one that leaves money for the fitting. 15 sizes, 16 to 22 inch.

Radial Classic: the tyre for classic cars

Modern rubber under a period look, for the car that goes to shows and Sunday drives. A symmetric grand touring tread with four wide grooves for the wet, a modern compound tuned for the weight and handling of an older car, and a radial casing that rides quietly and evenly, in the 13 to 15 inch sizes the classics wear. Raised white lettering for the muscle car presence on seven sizes, a white wall for the vintage look on four. Graded UTQG 480 A B. 11 sizes, 13 to 15 inch.

The grading, and what it proves

Treadwear grades in our range run from 480 on the Radial Classic to 600 on the Comptrax H/T. Our own workshop records put the median tyre we inspect at 400 and the median low profile tyre at 320, so a Comptrax PR1 at 560 with AA traction is a tyre built to grip and to last. The New Mutant range is not graded because UTQG does not apply to light truck tyres; its proof is the construction, 10 ply casings and dual sidewalls built for the loads and the country a ute sees.
