The short answer

The Radial Classic is Predator's tyre for classic cars, in 11 sizes from 13 to 15 inch. The period look on the sidewall and a modern radial underneath, for the classic that goes to shows and still gets driven.

  • White wall or raised white letters: a white wall on four sizes, raised white letters on seven.
  • UTQG 480 A B on every size, a treadwear grade above the median of 400 for the tyres we inspect.
  • Four wide grooves right around the tread to clear water, and an A for wet traction.
  • Symmetrical and not directional, so a tyre can go on any corner with its white side out.
  • Driving something newer? The Comptrax PR1 is Predator's all season performance tyre for modern cars, 16 to 24 inch.

What the Radial Classic is built to do

Keep a classic looking the way it should, without giving up the way a modern tyre drives.

The sidewall is what people see at a show, so the Radial Classic gives you the look of the era: a white wall for the chrome and fins of the fifties and sixties, or raised white letters for the muscle cars that followed. Under that sidewall it is a modern radial, with an all season tread cut by four wide grooves to clear water and a compound graded 480 for treadwear. Predator built it for the car show, the weekend drive and the daily commute alike, in the 13 to 15 inch sizes that classics wear.

How the Radial Classic works

Every part of the Radial Classic has a job to do. Here is what each one does for you, on the road and at the show.

Predator Radial Classic tread seen face on, with four grooves around the tyre
Four grooves. Each one carries water out from under the tread.

The look, done properly

The sidewall is where a classic tyre earns its place, and the Radial Classic gets it right. The white wall sizes carry a broad band of white rubber, the look that goes with chrome bumpers and tail fins. The raised white letter sizes spell out RADIAL CLASSIC and PREDATOR in white rubber moulded proud of the sidewall, the muscle car look. New tyres arrive with a blue coat over the white to protect it on the way to you, and it washes off with soapy water.

Grip when the road is wet

Four wide grooves run right around the Radial Classic, and each one is a channel that carries water out from under the tread, so the rubber stays on the road instead of riding up on a film of water. Angled slots across the ribs add extra edges that grip as you brake. The grading shows it: every size scores an A for traction, a grade earned in a braking test on a wet road.

A smooth, steady ride

A classic is for enjoying the drive, and the Radial Classic is built for exactly that. Its radial casing lets the sidewall flex over bumps while the belts under the tread keep it flat and steady on the road. That is what makes a radial steer more precisely and wear more slowly than the bias ply tyres many classics first wore. The symmetrical tread rolls evenly and quietly at open road speeds, so you hear the engine, not the tyres.

Wear you can count on

Every Radial Classic size is graded 480 for treadwear, above the median of 400 for the tyres we inspect in our workshop. The tread is symmetrical and not directional, so a tyre can move to any corner of the car with its white side still facing out, and rotating the set spreads the wear evenly across all four. Keep the pressures right and the tread wears flat and even, the way it was designed to.

Where the Radial Classic fits and where it does not

Good for

  • Classic, muscle and retro cars on 13 to 15 inch wheels
  • Show cars that get driven to the show, not trailered
  • Owners who want the white wall or white letter look on a modern radial

Not sure of your size? Read it off the sidewall of the tyre you have now and check it against the owner's manual, because a classic that has changed hands a few times may not be on its original size. Our tyre size calculator compares one size against another before you change anything.
Is it the right tyre

White wall or raised white letters: which should I choose?

Go by the era of the car. The white wall is the look of the fifties and early sixties, of chrome, fins and big sedans, and it comes on the narrower sizes that suit those cars. Raised white letters are the muscle car look of the late sixties and seventies, on wider tyres. Each size comes in one style, named in its title: the white wall in 205/70R14, 165R15, 195/65R15 and 205/70R15, and raised white letters in 215/50R13, 245/60R14, 215/70R15, 225/60R15, 225/70R15, 235/60R15 and 245/60R15.

Is the Predator Radial Classic any good?

Yes, and the grading backs it up. Every size is graded 480 A B: 480 for treadwear, above the median of 400 for the tyres we inspect, and an A for traction, from a braking test on a wet road. Under the white wall or the white letters it is a modern radial with a four groove all season tread, from Predator, the American tyre brand, and we fit it in our own Te Puke workshop.

Can I drive on it every day?

Yes. Predator built the Radial Classic for the car show, the weekend drive and the daily commute alike. It is an all season tyre with four wide grooves to clear water and an A for wet traction, so a classic that gets used is as well served as one that gets polished. Keep the pressures at the figure for your car and rotate the tyres regularly, and they will look after you.
Ratings and sizes

What does 480 A B mean?

It is the Uniform Tire Quality Grade, moulded into the sidewall of tyres sold in the United States. 480 is treadwear, graded against a reference tyre: the higher the number, the longer the tread is built to last, and it compares best within a brand. A is traction, from a braking test on a wet road, graded AA, A, B or C. B is temperature, the tyre's resistance to heat at speed, graded A, B or C.

What load and speed rating do I need?

Match or beat the numbers for your car, from the door placard or the owner's manual. Across the Radial Classic range the load index runs from 84 to 101, which is 500 kg to 825 kg per tyre, and the speed ratings are S (180 km/h), H (210 km/h) and V (240 km/h). Our load rating guide and speed rating guide explain the numbers.

Which way round does it go?

White side out. The tread is symmetrical and not directional, so a tyre can go on any corner of the car with its white side facing out, and rotating a set is simple: front to back, or across the car. Our tread pattern guide shows how to tell the types apart.
Buying

Can you fit them for me?

Yes. Every size has a fitted and balanced option at our Te Puke workshop, and we fit them with the white side facing out. Choose it on the tyre's own page, then book a time online.

How do I keep the white wall white?

Clean the white with soapy water and a soft brush when you wash the car. New tyres arrive with a blue coat over the white rubber to protect it on the way to you, and it washes off the same way. Keep tyre shine off the white parts and save it for the black.

Who makes Predator tyres?

Predator is an American tyre brand from Transamerica Tire in Memphis, Tennessee, designed in the United States and built in factories across Southeast Asia. The Radial Classic sits alongside the New Mutant off road range and the Comptrax road tyres. We import Predator ourselves, and the whole range is on our Predator page.

UTQG is a United States grading scheme. New Zealand has no tyre grading scheme of its own, so the grades above are context rather than a local standard.
