The short answer

The Comptrax PR1 is Predator's ultra high performance tyre, in 18 sizes from 16 to 24 inch. Sharp in the dry, sure in the wet, quiet on the motorway, for the car that gets driven properly.

  • UTQG 560 AA A on every size: AA is the top wet traction grade there is.
  • Treadwear 560, against a median of 400 for the tyres we inspect.
  • Asymmetric: a solid outer rib for steering, sipes that lock together in the corners.
  • W and V speed rated, with eight XL sizes for heavier cars and SUVs.
  • Driving a ute? The Comptrax H/T is the highway tyre in the same family.

What the Comptrax PR1 is built to do

Carve through corners with precision and keep a quiet, comfortable ride on the way home.

A performance tyre has two jobs that pull against each other: bite hard in the corners and under braking, and still ride quietly and clear water on a wet motorway. The PR1 is asymmetric so it can do both, with a different job for each half of the tread. Three main grooves and curved channels carry water away, deep sipes across the inner and centre blocks lock together under cornering load, and a solid rib beside the outer shoulder keeps the steering crisp and the car tracking straight. Every size is graded 560 AA A. It comes in 18 sizes from 16 to 24 inch.

Speed and load Twelve sizes are W rated (270 km/h) and six are V rated (240 km/h), and eight of the eighteen are XL. Match or beat the load index and the speed letter on your door placard, and keep both tyres on an axle the same.

How the Comptrax PR1 works

Every part of the PR1 has a job to do. Here is what each one does for you, in the corners and in the wet.

Water out, contact kept

Three main grooves run right around the PR1, and curved channels sweep out from them to the shoulders. Together they give water a fast way out from under the tread, so the rubber stays pressed onto the road instead of riding up on a film of water. It shows in the grading: every size scores AA for traction, the top grade there is, earned in a braking test on a wet road.

Sipes that lock in the corners

Deep, thin sipes cut across the PR1's inner shoulder and centre blocks. In the wet each one is an edge that wipes water away. Under hard cornering and braking the sides of each sipe press together and lock, so the block stays stiff instead of squirming. That is how the same blocks give grip in the rain and precision in the dry.

A solid rib for steering

Beside the outer shoulder blocks runs a solid rib, with no grooves or sipes cutting across it. It is the part of the tyre that answers first when you turn the wheel, and because it does not flex it gives a crisp, direct steering feel and keeps the car tracking straight and settled at motorway speed.

Asymmetric: two jobs, one tyre

The PR1's inner half is cut for the wet, with more sipes and channels to clear water. The outer half, which takes the load in a corner, is built stiffer and more solid for grip and steering. The outside face is marked on the sidewall, and the tyre is fitted with that face out. It is not directional, so it can still rotate to any corner of the car.

Tread that lasts

A performance tyre is often a soft, short lived one, but every PR1 size is graded 560 for treadwear, against a median of 400 for the tyres we inspect in our workshop. Keep the pressures right and rotate the set regularly, and that grade turns into more kilometres between sets, without giving up the grip that the AA traction grade promises.

Quiet at speed

Predator built the PR1 to hold a quiet, comfortable ride as well as to corner, because a performance car spends far more of its life on the motorway than on the good roads. So the car stays a pleasant place to be on the long drive home, and the tyre is easy to live with every day, not only when the road gets interesting.

The whole range

Every Predator pattern

From the Comptrax road tyres to the New Mutant off road family.

Low profile tyres need the right pressure A low sidewall has less rubber to cushion a pothole, so the pressure matters more. Our tyre pressure guide explains what to run, and the tyre size calculator checks a new size against your old one.
Is it the right tyre

What is an ultra high performance tyre?

A tyre built first for grip and steering: low sidewalls, a stiff shoulder for the corners, a compound that holds on at speed, and the ratings to match, W and V here. It suits a car that gets driven with some enthusiasm on the bigger wheels modern cars wear. Our high performance guide covers the choice in full.

Is the Comptrax PR1 any good?

Yes, and the grading proves it. Every size is graded 560 AA A: AA is the top traction grade there is, from a braking test on a wet road, and 560 for treadwear sits well above the median of 400 for the tyres we inspect in our workshop. It is Predator's own performance tyre, and we import it and fit it in our own Te Puke workshop.

Is it an all season tyre?

Yes. The PR1 is built to work across the seasons, in the dry heat of summer and on cold, wet winter roads, which is what New Zealand driving asks of a tyre. It is not a snow tyre, so for regular alpine trips in winter carry chains as the road signs require.
Ratings and sizes

What does 560 AA A mean?

It is the Uniform Tire Quality Grade, moulded into the sidewall of tyres sold in the United States. 560 is treadwear, graded against a reference tyre: the higher the number, the longer the tread is built to last. AA is traction, from a braking test on a wet road, and it is the top grade there is. The last A is temperature, the tyre's resistance to heat at speed, and A is the top grade there too.

What does XL mean?

Extra load. An XL tyre is built to carry more weight at a higher pressure than a standard load tyre of the same size, which suits heavier cars and SUVs. Eight of the 18 PR1 sizes are XL. Match or beat the load index on your door placard; our load rating guide explains the numbers.

Which way round does it go?

Outside face out. The PR1 is asymmetric, so its two halves do different jobs, and the sidewall is marked with the face that goes on the outside of the car. It is not directional, so once it is on the wheel it can go to any corner and be rotated in any pattern. We fit it the right way round. Our tread pattern guide shows the three types.
Buying

Comptrax PR1 or Comptrax H/T?

Go by the vehicle. The PR1 is the performance tyre, for cars, hot hatches and performance SUVs on 16 to 24 inch wheels. The Comptrax H/T is the highway tyre for utes and SUVs that carry and tow. If the vehicle is a ute, it is the H/T; if it is a car driven with enthusiasm, the PR1.

Can you fit them for me?

Yes. Every size has a fitted and balanced option at our Te Puke workshop, and low profile tyres on big wheels are best fitted by a shop with the right machine. Choose it on the tyre's own page, then book a time online.

Who makes Predator tyres?

Predator is an American tyre brand from Transamerica Tire in Memphis, Tennessee, designed in the United States and built in factories across Southeast Asia. The Comptrax family is its road range, and the PR1 is its performance tyre. We import Predator ourselves, and the whole range is on our Predator page.
Where these figures come from
  • UTQG grades, load indices, speed ratings, XL and sizes: our own listings for the 18 Comptrax PR1 sizes, read 24 September 2026, each matched against Predator's own PR1 A/S size table
  • Load in kilograms and speed in km/h: the standard load index and speed symbol tables
  • Median treadwear of 400: our own workshop inspection records, published in the low profile tyre guide
  • The grooves, the sipes, the solid rib and the asymmetric design: Predator's Comptrax PR1 A/S page, and the tyre itself, pictured above
  • What the UTQG grades measure: the United States Uniform Tire Quality Grading standard, 49 CFR 575.104
  • Designed in the United States, built in Southeast Asia: Predator Tires' about page

UTQG is a United States grading scheme. New Zealand has no tyre grading scheme of its own, so the grades above are context rather than a local standard.
