📖 ANCHEE AC818 UHP — COMPLETE NZ PERFORMANCE TYRE GUIDE

The AC818 is Anchee's flagship UHP (Ultra High Performance) tyre — engineered for drivers who demand more from their tyres. Whether you're pushing a Subaru WRX through the Taupo twisties, commuting in a Golf GTI, or cruising in a Skyline — this guide covers everything you need to know about high performance tyres in NZ.

🏎️ PERFORMANCE TYRE TERMINOLOGY

HP
High Performance
Designed for sporty driving with better handling and grip than standard touring tyres. Speed ratings typically H (210 km/h) or V (240 km/h).
UHP
Ultra High Performance
The highest tier of road-legal performance tyres. Optimised for maximum grip, precise handling, and high-speed stability. Speed ratings W (270 km/h) or Y (300 km/h). The AC818 is a UHP tyre.
Summer Tyres
Warm Weather Performance
UHP tyres are typically "summer" compounds — optimised for dry and wet grip above 7°C. Not designed for snow or ice.
Asymmetric Pattern
Different Inside/Outside
UHP tyres often feature asymmetric tread — outer shoulder for cornering grip, inner for water evacuation. Must be fitted correctly (marked "OUTSIDE").

💡 What does UTQG 480 A A mean? The UTQG system rates tyres on treadwear, traction, and temperature. A treadwear of 480 is excellent for a UHP tyre — many premium performance tyres are under 300. The dual "A" ratings indicate top-tier wet grip and heat resistance. For context, a treadwear of 480 suggests 30,000-50,000km life with spirited driving. Learn more about tyre grades →

🏁 Track Day Tip: For serious track use, we recommend running slightly lower pressures than road use (check your vehicle's door jamb, then reduce 2-4 PSI for track). Hot pressures after a few laps should be around 32-36 PSI depending on your car and driving style. Always check pressures when cold before each session.

🎯 WHAT UHP TYRES ARE DESIGNED FOR

UHP (Ultra High Performance) tyres like the AC818 sacrifice some comfort and tread life for maximum grip and handling precision. Here's where they excel:

🏔️
Spirited Driving
Twisty roads, mountain passes, enthusiast drives — where grip matters
🏁
Track Days
Club motorsport, track days, time attacks — road-legal performance
🚗
Performance Cars
Hot hatches, sports sedans, muscle cars — tyres that match the car
🛣️
High-Speed Touring
Autobahn-style cruising — stable at speed, confident in corners
🔧
Modified Vehicles
Power upgrades, suspension mods — tyres that handle extra grunt
☀️
Summer Performance
Warm weather grip — optimised for temps above 7°C
⚠️ UHP tyres are NOT designed for: Winter conditions (snow, ice, sub-7°C temps), gravel roads, or maximum fuel economy. If you need year-round capability or gravel performance, consider the AC808 Touring or AC858 All-Terrain instead.

❓ FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

HP (High Performance) tyres bridge the gap between touring tyres and full performance — they offer better handling than standard tyres while maintaining reasonable comfort and tread life. Typically speed-rated H (210 km/h) or V (240 km/h). UHP (Ultra High Performance) tyres like the AC818 are the top tier — maximum grip, precise handling, speed ratings of W (270 km/h) or Y (300 km/h), but with some trade-off in ride comfort and tread life. UHP is what you want for a performance car.
Speed ratings indicate the maximum speed a tyre is certified for: W = 270 km/h, Y = 300 km/h. These far exceed NZ speed limits, but the rating reflects the tyre's ability to handle heat buildup, centrifugal forces, and structural stress at speed. Higher ratings generally mean stiffer construction and better high-speed stability — important for performance driving even at legal speeds.
UHP tyres trade tread life for grip — that's the fundamental compromise. The AC818 with its UTQG 480 treadwear rating is actually excellent for a UHP tyre (many premium UHP tyres are under 300). Expect 30,000-50,000km with spirited driving, more with conservative use. Track use will significantly reduce life — a hard track day might cost 5,000km of tread.
UHP tyres are "summer" compounds — optimised for warm conditions (above 7°C). Below 7°C, the compound hardens and grip decreases. They are not suitable for snow or ice. If you drive in cold conditions, consider keeping a set of touring tyres for winter or choosing an all-season alternative. Most of NZ's North Island is fine year-round; South Island or mountain trips may need winter tyres.
Asymmetric tyres have different tread patterns on the inner and outer sections. The outer shoulder has larger, stiffer blocks for cornering grip. The inner section has more grooves for water evacuation and wet grip. The tyre sidewall is marked "OUTSIDE" — this must face outward when fitted. Unlike directional tyres, asymmetric tyres can be swapped left-to-right without issue.
Yes. The AC818 is a DOT-legal road tyre suitable for track days and club motorsport. Most track day events in NZ require road-legal tyres (no slicks or R-compound). The AC818's W/Y speed rating and UTQG A traction rating make it well-suited for amateur motorsport. For serious competition, consider dedicated track tyres.
Yes — with 67 sizes from R16 to R22, we can match most staggered setups (different front/rear sizes). Common staggered combos: 225/40R18 front + 255/35R18 rear, or 245/35R19 front + 275/30R19 rear. Contact us with your wheel specs and we'll confirm fitment.
