LIGHT TRUCK & COMMERCIAL TYRES NZ: BUILT FOR REAL WORK

LT and Commercial tyres aren't about tough looks β€” they're about load capacity, heat management, and uptime. For utes carrying tools, vans doing stop-start delivery, and vehicles that tow, getting construction and load rating right is the difference between long life and rapid wear.

🚚 WHAT ARE LT & COMMERCIAL TYRES?

LT (Light Truck) and Commercial (C) tyres are built for vehicles that do real work: utes carrying tools, vans doing stop-start delivery, and light trucks at highway speeds under load. The goal is simple: carry weight safely while controlling heat.

How to Spot Them

  • LT-metric: Size starts with "LT" (e.g., LT265/70R17)
  • Commercial (C): Size ends with "C" (e.g., 215/65R16C)
  • Load Range: C, D, E, F, or G on sidewall
  • Service description: e.g., 121/118S (load index + speed rating)
Critical safety rule: If your ute/van was factory-spec'd with LT or Commercial tyres, don't down-spec to passenger tyres. P-metric tyres are de-rated by ~9-10% for light-truck service β€” heat + overload is where failures happen.

βš–οΈ LT VS COMMERCIAL VS PASSENGER

The most common mistake is choosing tyres based on price instead of duty cycle. Here's the quick guide:

Passenger (P-Metric) Light Duty
Best for: SUVs/crossovers with light loads, comfort-focused driving. Lower load capacity, softer ride. Not suitable for regular towing or heavy payload work.
Warning: ~9-10% de-rated for LT service β€’ Don't substitute for factory LT spec
XL (Extra Load) Medium Duty
Best for: Heavier SUVs, occasional load. More capacity than standard passenger tyres but still not true LT/C construction. Check load index matches your needs.
Note: Bridge between P-metric and LT β€’ Good for occasional use

πŸ“ LOAD RANGE: C, D, E EXPLAINED

Load Range indicates maximum rated inflation pressure (and therefore maximum load capacity). It doesn't mean run max pressure all the time β€” match pressure to your actual load.

C
6PR
50 PSI / 350 kPa
D
8PR
65 PSI / 450 kPa
E
10PR
80 PSI / 550 kPa
F
12PR
95 PSI / 650 kPa
G
14PR
110 PSI / 760 kPa
How to choose: C = light commercial, moderate loads. D = heavier use, frequent towing. E = heavy-duty utes, high payload, serious towing. Choose a load range that covers your real loads with 15-20% safety margin.

🧰 BEST TYRES BY USE CASE

Don't buy for the 5% scenario β€” buy for your daily work:

πŸ“¦
Courier / Delivery Vans
Commercial "C" tyres focused on wet safety + kerb durability. Stop/start and kerbing destroy weak casings fast.
πŸͺš
Trades Utes (Tools Daily)
LT tyres with appropriate load range (often C/D/E). Payload + towing stability + heat control on motorway runs.
🚀
Regular Towing
LT construction with correct load index. Stiffer casing = less sway, better stability. Tyres are the foundation of towing safety.
πŸ›»
Rural / Gravel Access
Robust LT patterns with good cut/chip resistance. Sharp aggregate damage costs more than the tyre.
πŸ•οΈ
Motorhomes / Campers
Match factory spec (often Commercial "C" or LT). High constant load + long-distance heat exposure demands proper construction.
πŸ›£οΈ
Highway Fleet Work
Road-focused LT/Commercial with strong wet braking + long life. Lower rolling resistance reduces total operating cost.

🌑️ PRESSURE: THE #1 FACTOR IN LT TYRE LIFE

Most "mystery wear" in commercial tyres is actually pressure mismatch. LT tyres don't have one perfect pressure β€” they have a load/pressure relationship.

Quick Best Practice

  • Start with door placard β€” this is your baseline
  • Match pressure to actual load using manufacturer tables
  • Build 15-20% reserve above maximum expected load
  • Check cold β€” always before driving, not after
  • Never exceed vehicle placard OR tyre max (use lower of the two)
Common mistakes: Running max pressure when unladen β†’ harsh ride + centre wear + reduced grip. Not increasing pressure when loaded β†’ shoulder wear + heat build-up + potential failure.

❓ LT & COMMERCIAL TYRE FAQS

LT tyres are reinforced tyres designed for utes, vans, light trucks, towing, and commercial use. They're built to carry higher loads, run higher pressures, resist heat build-up, and survive kerbs, gravel, and worksite abuse better than passenger tyres. Common sizes include LT265/70R17 and LT285/75R16.

A "C" at the end of the size (e.g., 215/65R16C) indicates commercial/van tyre construction designed for heavier loads, frequent stop-start driving, and stronger sidewalls. Common on delivery vans like Hiace and Transit, couriers, trades vans, and small motorhomes.

Generally no. For light-truck service, passenger (P-metric) tyres are typically de-rated by about 9-10% compared with equivalent LT load ratings. If your vehicle was specified with LT or commercial tyres, match or exceed the original load rating and construction for safety.

Load Range indicates maximum rated inflation pressure and load capacity. C (6PR, 50 PSI) suits light commercial and moderate loads. D (8PR, 65 PSI) for heavier use and towing. E (10PR, 80 PSI) for heavy-duty utes, high payload, and serious towing. Choose based on your actual loads with a 15-20% safety margin.

Use the vehicle door placard as baseline, then match to real load using the tyre's load/inflation tables. For work vehicles, aim for 15-20% reserve capacity above maximum expected load, and always check pressures cold. Use our Tyre Pressure Calculator for guidance.

Front-heavy loading, frequent turning, kerbing, and stop-start duty cycles create high scrub and heat. Fix it with correct pressures, scheduled rotations (every 10,000km), and early alignment checks β€” "wait until it's bad" can halve tyre life.

If you tow regularly, carry heavy loads, or your vehicle specifies LT tyres, LT construction is usually the right call. The stiffer casing and higher pressure capability improve stability, reduce heat, and help tyre longevity when loaded. See our Towing Tyre Guide for details.
