The short answer

Taupo is one of the places we deliver to most that has no shop of ours anywhere near it. Free to urban addresses, most months since 2020, from a Te Puke warehouse with 15,000 tyres on the floor. Cheaper than a lakeside retail price, and the freight costs you nothing.

What we see

Cold mornings and long highway runs

Taupo asks two things of a tyre that most of the country does not.

❄ Frost and cold rubber

Winter mornings here are genuinely cold. Compound matters more than it does on the coast, because a hard compound at four degrees is not the tyre you thought you bought.

🛣 Long highway distances

Everything is an hour away. That is heat and steady wear rather than town scrub, and it rewards a tyre with the tread depth to last it.

🚢 Towing

Boats, caravans and trailers, most weekends. Towing loads the rear axle in a way daily driving does not, and it is the fastest way to find out a load rating was marginal.

The honest bit

Who fits them once they land in Taupo?

Not us, and that is the one real downside of buying from out of town. Almost any shop will fit tyres they did not sell, usually $20 to $40 a tyre. Ring first. On a full set the saving covers it comfortably; on a single tyre it might not, and we would rather say so than let you find out.

Experience

What Taupo buys from us

Taupo has been a steady destination since 2020 and it is one of the few towns where the order mix is genuinely split, half passenger and half ute or 4WD. Everything goes out from one warehouse rather than a distribution network, so what the website says is in stock is on the floor in Te Puke.

Holiday towns do not get cheap prices as a rule. Ours start at $70 and are the same in Taupo as anywhere else, because the price is set by the container, not by the postcode.

Where we deliver in Taupo

We deliver to any address in Taupo, including Nukuhau, Richmond Heights, Hilltop and Wairakei, and out to Turangi at the flat rural rate. Your house, your workplace, or straight to whichever workshop is fitting them.

Put their address in at checkout and ring them so they are expecting it.

SH33 to Rotorua then SH5. About 135km.

One question we get

Does the cold really change which tyre I should buy?

More than most people expect. Rubber stiffens as it cools and grip drops with it, which is why the wet grip grade is worth checking rather than assuming. New Zealand sets no minimum wet grip standard at all, so it is entirely down to what you choose.

Fitting prices and what is included: fitting terms. Delivery rates, rural addresses and timeframes: shipping policy.

Taylor Houghton has spent his working life in the tyre trade, beginning in his father's tyre business at the age of five and handling import containers through his school years. He developed Tyre Dispatch, the retail arm of Traction Tyres, and now manages it alongside the Traction Tyres warehouse in Te Puke, with responsibility for buying and brand selection. He holds no ownership interest in either business.

Both brands the company distributes exclusively in New Zealand, Anchee and Predator, were his selections, each assessed on factory accreditation, compound composition and independent test data rather than name recognition. More than 100,000 Anchee tyres have since been sold here, and both brands hold five star review averages.

The guides, calculators and tools on this site are his own work, as is the workshop dataset behind them, which covers 1,700+ documented tyre inspections and 45,000+ photographs and represents more than a thousand hours, the majority outside business hours. He is the petitioner to Parliament for mandatory tyre performance labelling and minimum wet-grip standards in New Zealand, and appeared in the launch video for Tyrewise, the national tyre stewardship scheme.

Photography, measurements and advice on this site are first-hand; where a figure comes from elsewhere, it is attributed.
