Hills and weather do most of the damage
Wellington is the hardest wet-weather driving in the country, and the tyre is the only thing between the two.
⛰ Gradients
Steep constant climbing and descending loads front and rear differently and wears them at different rates. Rotation matters more here than almost anywhere.
🌬 Wind and standing water
Crosswind plus water is exactly the combination wet grip exists for. It is the one grade we would not compromise on for a Wellington car.
🪨 Narrow hill streets
Kerbing damages sidewalls, and a damaged sidewall cannot be repaired regardless of how much tread is left.
Who fits them once they land in Wellington?
Not us, and that is the one real downside of buying from out of town. Almost any shop will fit tyres they did not sell, usually $20 to $40 a tyre. Ring first. On a full set the saving covers it comfortably; on a single tyre it might not, and we would rather say so than let you find out.

Wellington is the longest regular North Island run we do, and one of the busiest, every month since 2020. The mix is noticeably more performance-oriented than the provincial towns. Given the hills and the weather, wet grip is the grade we would push hardest on for a Wellington vehicle, and New Zealand sets no minimum for it at all.
Cheap does not have to mean poor wet grip, though it often does, which is why every brand we bring in is checked on wet grade before it is checked on price. The range starts at $70.

Does wet grip really matter that much in Wellington?
More than anywhere else in the country. New Zealand sets no minimum wet grip standard at all, so the grade is entirely down to what you choose to buy, and Wellington is where that choice gets tested most often.
