LT = Light Truck. These tyres are built with stronger construction than passenger (P-metric) tyres — reinforced sidewalls, stiffer carcass, higher load capacity. C-rating = Commercial grade. The "C" suffix (e.g. 195R15C) indicates the tyre meets commercial vehicle standards. Both terms indicate the tyre is designed for load-carrying vehicles like vans, utes, and trailers.
Match or exceed your vehicle's factory spec. Check your door jamb placard for the original tyre rating. As a guide: 6PR for light loads (empty trailers, caravans), 8PR for normal commercial use (loaded vans, boat trailers, horse floats — most common), 12PR for heavy duty (commercial fleet, dual wheels, max loads). Never go below the factory rating.
Not recommended. Passenger tyres have roughly 10% lower load capacity and aren't designed for the constant-load duty cycle of trailers. They also have softer sidewalls that can flex under load, generating heat and potentially failing. LT/C-rated tyres like the AC838 are purpose-built for trailer use — the reinforced construction handles the stress of loading, unloading, and sitting stationary for extended periods.
The dual rating shows load capacity for single wheel (first number) vs dual wheel (second number) fitment. 106/104R means: 950kg per tyre when fitted as a single wheel, 900kg per tyre when fitted as duals (side-by-side). Duals run hotter due to reduced airflow, so the rating is slightly lower. Most vans and trailers use single fitment — use the first number.
Check your trailer's placard or manual for the recommended pressure. As a general guide, LT tyres on trailers are typically run at 50-65 PSI when loaded.
