The short answer

The New Mutant X-AT is Predator's all terrain, in 19 sizes from 15 to 22 inch. Aggressive enough for the weekend, quiet enough for the week, and rated for snow on every size.

  • Snowflake rated: every size carries the three peak mountain snowflake, earned in a snow traction test rather than printed on.
  • Two sidewalls on one tyre, one blocked and one spiked, so you choose the face that goes out.
  • UTQG 500 A B on nine sizes and 520 A A on two, against a median of 400 for the tyres we inspect.
  • Eight light truck sizes, seven at 10 ply and one at 6 ply, for utes that carry and tow.
  • Living in the mud instead? The New Mutant X-MT is the mud terrain in the same family.

What the X-AT is built to do

One tyre for the week and the weekend: the commute, the metal road, the farm track and the trip up the mountain.

Most utes and 4WDs spend five days on the seal and two days somewhere harder, so the X-AT is built for both ends of that. The tread is deep and open, with staggered shoulder lugs that bite into gravel, mud and rock, while the X shaped blocks down the middle are laid out in a mix of lengths to keep it quiet at open road speed. Every size carries the three peak mountain snowflake, so it is rated for severe snow service, and each sidewall is moulded with raised blocks that add grip in a rut and take the scrapes that would otherwise land on the casing. It comes in 19 sizes from 15 to 22 inch, eight of them light truck sizes.

How the X-AT works

Every part of the X-AT has a job to do. Here is what each one does for you, on the seal and off it.

One sidewall of the Predator New Mutant X-AT, with the blocked pattern
Sidewall one. The blocked face.
The other sidewall of the Predator New Mutant X-AT, with the spiked pattern
Sidewall two. The spiked face. Same tyre, turned around.

Rated for snow, not just marked for it

Every X-AT size carries the three peak mountain snowflake on its sidewall. That symbol is not a description a maker can print on any tread: a tyre earns it by passing a standard snow traction test, which is why winter tyre laws overseas look for it and not for the older M+S marking. For a frosty Desert Road morning, a farm track in July or a run up to the snow, it is the difference between a tyre shaped for winter and one that has proved it.

Two sidewalls, one tyre

The X-AT is moulded with a different pattern on each side, one blocked and one spiked, so you choose which face turns out and the truck looks the way you want it. Both sides do the same work off the seal. The raised blocks give the tyre something to bite with in a rut, where the tread itself is barely touching, and they take the scrapes from rocks and stumps that would otherwise land on the casing.

Bite once the seal runs out

Deep grooves run through the X-AT and open out at the shoulders, where staggered lugs step in and out of the tread edge. On gravel, mud and broken ground those lugs give the tyre a row of extra biting edges, and the open spaces between them let the muck squeeze out instead of packing in and turning the tread into a slick. Fine cuts across the blocks add grip on wet seal and hard clay.

Quiet where you spend most of your time

An all terrain is only as good as its commute. The X shaped blocks down the centre of the tread are cut in a mix of lengths and set in a tuned order, so instead of every block striking the road on the same beat and building one drone, the sound spreads across many notes and falls away. With the silica compound and a wide, even contact patch under you, it rolls smoothly at open road speed.

Tread that lasts, and grips in the wet

The silica compound is built to last on the seal as well as grip off it. Nine sizes are graded 500 for treadwear and two are graded 520, against a median of 400 for the tyres we inspect in our workshop, and every graded size takes an A for traction, which is earned in a braking test on a wet road. The wide contact patch spreads the load evenly across the tread, so it wears flat instead of in bands.

Built to carry and tow

Eight of the sizes are light truck sizes, seven of them 10 ply and one 6 ply. That rating measures how much load the casing takes at pressure, which is what a loaded tray, a tandem trailer or a bull bar and canopy need under them. Across the range the load index runs to 126, or 1,700 kilograms a tyre, and a light truck casing also stands up better to the stones and stumps of a metal road.

Where the X-AT fits and where it does not

Good for

  • Utes, 4WDs and SUVs on 15 to 22 inch wheels that see seal and gravel both
  • Winter roads, with the three peak mountain snowflake on every size
  • Towing and carrying, on the eight light truck sizes
  • Farm tracks, metal roads, riverbeds and the beach

The whole range

Every Predator pattern

From the New Mutant off road family to the Comptrax road tyres.

Going up a size? Plenty of utes run a taller all terrain than they left the factory on. Our tyre size calculator compares one size against another for diameter and speedometer error, the 4WD tyre hub covers the trade offs, and both tyres on an axle have to match, as our WOF tyre guide explains.
Is it the right tyre

What does the snowflake on the sidewall mean?

That it is rated for severe snow service. The three peak mountain snowflake is not a marking a tyre maker can simply print on a pattern: a tyre earns it by passing a standard snow traction test, and it is the mark winter tyre laws overseas look for. The older M+S marking beside it only describes the tread. Every X-AT size carries the snowflake, which on a frosty morning or a run up to the snow is worth having under you.

Is the New Mutant X-AT any good?

Yes, and it is graded to prove it. Nine sizes are graded 500 for treadwear and two are graded 520, against a median of 400 for the tyres we inspect, and every graded size takes an A for traction on a wet road. Every size is snowflake rated, eight of the 19 are light truck sizes for utes that work, and it is the tyre Predator built to be quiet on the seal and aggressive off it. We import it ourselves and fit it in our own Te Puke workshop.

Will it be loud on the road?

Not the way an old all terrain was. The X shaped blocks down the middle of the tread are cut in a mix of lengths and set in a tuned order, so instead of every block striking the road on the same beat and building one drone, the sound spreads across many notes. Predator built the X-AT for the commute as much as the weekend, and on the open road it settles down to a hum you stop noticing.
Ratings and sizes

What does 10 ply mean on the light truck sizes?

It is a strength grade for the casing, not a count of layers. A 10 ply light truck tyre carries a heavier load at a higher pressure and stands up better to a stone through the sidewall, which is what a loaded ute on a metal road needs. Eight of our 19 X-AT sizes are light truck: seven at 10 ply and one at 6 ply. Our load rating guide explains the numbers.

What load and speed rating do I need?

Match or beat the figures on your door placard, and take the load rating seriously if you tow or carry. Across the X-AT the load index runs from 104 to 126, which is 900 kg to 1,700 kg per tyre, and the speed ratings are R (170 km/h), S (180 km/h), T (190 km/h) and H (210 km/h). Our towing load calculator works out what you need behind a loaded trailer, and the WOF tyre guide covers what an inspector checks.

Which sidewall faces out?

Whichever you like. The X-AT is moulded with a different pattern on each sidewall, one blocked and one spiked, so the same tyre gives you two looks. Say which face you want when you order and we fit all four the same way. The tread itself is symmetrical and not directional, so a tyre can go on any corner and be rotated front to back or across the car. Our tread pattern guide shows how to tell the types apart.
Buying

X-AT, RT Trail or X-MT?

Go by how much of your driving leaves the seal. The X-AT is the all rounder: quiet on the road, snowflake rated, and aggressive enough for gravel, farm tracks and the beach. The RT Trail is the rugged terrain step up for a ute that tows and goes bush. The X-MT is the mud terrain, the most aggressive tyre we sell, for the truck that lives in the ruts. Tell us the vehicle and what it does and we will say which.

Can you fit them for me?

Yes. Every size has a fitted and balanced option at our Te Puke workshop, and bigger all terrains are worth having balanced properly. Choose it on the tyre's own page, then book a time online. Our all terrain buying guide is worth a read first if you are choosing between types.

Who makes Predator tyres?

Predator is an American tyre brand from Transamerica Tire in Memphis, Tennessee, designed in the United States and built in factories across Southeast Asia. The New Mutant family is its off road range, and the X-AT is the all terrain in the middle of it. We import Predator ourselves, and the whole range is on our Predator page.
Where these figures come from

  • The three peak mountain snowflake on every size: Predator's own X-AT size and specification table, read 24 September 2026, which marks all 74 of its rows as snowflake rated
  • Load in kilograms and speed in km/h: the standard load index and speed symbol tables
  • Median treadwear of 400: our own workshop inspection records, published in the low profile tyre guide
  • The tread pattern, the dual sidewall and the silica compound: Predator's X-AT page and the tyre itself, pictured above
  • What the snowflake means: the standard snow traction test behind the symbol, which the older M+S marking does not require
  • Designed in the United States, built in Southeast Asia: Predator Tires' about page; Transamerica Tire of Memphis is named on its posters

UTQG is a United States grading scheme. New Zealand has no tyre grading scheme of its own, so the grades above are context rather than a local standard.
