What the Sport RX6 is built to do
A performance road tyre for hot hatches, sports sedans and performance cars on big wheels.
The Sport RX6 is built to be driven, and driven every day. Its asymmetric tread is laid out for grip and steering at speed, spiral grooves pull water out from under the tyre in the wet, and a compound made to run cool holds its grip on a long, hot run. Every size is W rated, eight of the nine are XL, and a treadwear grade of 340 means it keeps performing after a softer tyre has worn out. It comes in sizes from 17 to 20 inch.

How the Sport RX6 tread works
Every part of the Sport RX6's tread has a job to do. Here is what each one does for you on the road.
Grip in the corners
The Sport RX6 is asymmetric: the two halves of its tread are laid out differently, each for its own job, which is where a performance tyre gets its feel at speed. Turn in and it answers the wheel the way a car on big wheels should, then stays settled through the bend and steady on the motorway. The outside face is marked on the sidewall and the tyre goes on facing out, and we fit it the right way round.
Grip in the wet
Spiral grooves run through the Sport RX6's tread and give water a fast way out from under the tyre. Clear the water and the rubber stays pressed onto the road instead of riding up on a film of it, which is where wet grip comes from. It matters most in the first rain after a dry spell, when the road is at its greasiest, and on a wet motorway at open road speed.
A compound that keeps its cool
Heat is what wears a performance tyre out and takes the edge off its grip. Joyroad made the Sport RX6's compound to build up less heat as it works, so it holds its grip on a long run on a hot day as well as on the drive to work. A cooler running tyre is a longer lasting one too, and the grading shows it: treadwear 340, against a median of 320 for the low profile tyres we inspect.
Built for big wheels
The Sport RX6 comes in 17 to 20 inch sizes, the wheels modern performance cars and hot hatches wear, and every size is W rated, built and tested for 270 km/h. Eight of the nine are extra load (XL), a reinforced casing that carries more weight at a higher pressure, which suits a heavier modern car. Joyroad's catalogue gives it 7.8 mm of tread when new.
How the Sport RX6 is graded
Every one of the nine Sport RX6 sizes carries the same UTQG grade: 340 for treadwear, A for traction and A for temperature. A is the highest temperature grade there is.
The treadwear number is the one to watch. The median for the low profile tyres that come through our workshop is 320, and nearly half of them are graded 300 or below, because most tyres in these sizes are built soft for grip and graded accordingly. On speed, all nine sizes are W rated (270 km/h). Eight are XL for extra load, and the load index runs from 91 to 98, which is 615 kg to 750 kg per tyre. Joyroad's catalogue gives 7.8 mm of tread when new on every Sport RX6 size it lists, which leaves 6.3 mm to use before the 1.5 mm legal minimum in our WOF tyre guide.
