R10 Tyres NZ: 10-Inch Tyres for Trailers, Caravans & Classic Cars

R10 tyres fit 10-inch diameter rims — commonly found on trailers, caravans, classic Minis, and older compact vehicles. While becoming harder to source as vehicles move to larger wheels, R10 tyres remain essential for specific applications. This guide covers sizes, applications, and where to find them in NZ.

🔧 What Are R10 Tyres?

R10 tyres are designed to fit 10-inch diameter rims. The "R" indicates radial construction (as opposed to older bias-ply "D" tyres). These smaller tyres were common on compact vehicles from the 1960s-1980s and remain standard on many trailers and utility applications.

Reading R10 Tyre Sizes

R10 tyre sizes follow standard naming conventions:

  • 145R10 — 145mm section width, radial construction, 10-inch rim. The profile (aspect ratio) defaults to 80% when not specified, so this equals 145/80R10.
  • 145/80R10 — Same as above, with aspect ratio explicitly stated. The sidewall height is 80% of 145mm = 116mm.
  • 5.00R10 — Older imperial sizing. 5.00 inches section width (~127mm), radial, 10-inch rim. Common on vintage vehicles.
Important: R10 tyres are becoming increasingly scarce as manufacturers focus on modern 14"+ sizes. If you rely on R10 tyres for trailers or classic cars, consider buying spares while they're available, or planning a wheel upgrade to R12 or R13.

📏 Common R10 Tyre Sizes in NZ

Here are the R10 sizes you're most likely to encounter in New Zealand:

Size Width Typical Use Availability
135/95R10 135mm Narrow trailers, older vehicles Limited
5.00R10 ~127mm Vintage vehicles, specialty trailers Rare
5.20R10 ~132mm Vintage vehicles Rare

🚗 What Uses R10 Tyres?

R10 tyres serve several key applications in New Zealand:

🚚
Trailers

Box trailers, car trailers, and utility trailers often use 145R10 or 145/80R10 tyres. Many older NZ-built trailers were designed around 10-inch wheels.

🏕️
Caravans

Older caravans and small travel trailers frequently run R10 tyres. Check your caravan's specifications before replacing — many have specific load rating requirements.

🚤
Boat Trailers

Smaller boat trailers (for tinnies and dinghies) often use R10 wheels. Salt exposure means these tyres need regular inspection for corrosion damage.

🏎️
Classic Minis

Original Austin/Morris Minis and early Mini Coopers came with 10-inch wheels. Many enthusiasts maintain period-correct R10 tyres for authenticity.

🚙
Vintage Vehicles

Some 1960s-70s compact cars like early Fiat 500s, certain Datsuns, and British compacts used 10-inch wheels.

Golf Carts & Utility

Golf carts, airport baggage carts, and industrial utility vehicles sometimes use R10 or similar small-diameter tyres.

⚖️ Load Ratings & Speed Ratings for R10

For trailer applications especially, understanding load and speed ratings is critical for safety and compliance.

Typical R10 Load Ratings

145R10 tyres commonly carry load ratings between 78-84, which translates to:

  • 78 = 425kg per tyre
  • 80 = 450kg per tyre
  • 82 = 475kg per tyre
  • 84 = 500kg per tyre

For a twin-axle trailer with 4 tyres rated at 82, total load capacity = 4 × 475kg = 1,900kg.

Speed Ratings

Most R10 trailer tyres carry speed ratings of:

  • N = 140 km/h
  • M = 130 km/h
  • L = 120 km/h

NZ speed limits mean these ratings are adequate for legal towing. However, always match or exceed the original tyre specifications.

Trailer Safety: Never exceed your tyre's load rating. Overloaded trailer tyres generate excessive heat, leading to blowouts. Weigh your loaded trailer if unsure — many transfer stations have weighbridges.

🔄 Alternatives to R10 Tyres

If R10 tyres are hard to find or you're considering an upgrade, here are your options:

Upgrade to R12 or R13

Many trailer owners choose to upgrade their wheels and tyres to more common sizes:

  • R12 — 145R12 and 155R12 are more widely available than R10
  • R13 — Very common size with excellent availability and competitive pricing

This requires new wheels (rims) but provides better tyre selection, easier sourcing, and often improved load capacity.

Secondhand R10 Tyres

Quality secondhand tyres can be a cost-effective option, especially for low-mileage trailer use. Check for:

  • Minimum 4mm tread depth remaining
  • No cracking, bulges, or sidewall damage
  • Age under 6 years (check DOT code)
  • Matching sizes and load ratings on axles

❓ R10 Tyre FAQs

R10 indicates the tyre fits a 10-inch diameter rim. The "R" stands for radial construction (the standard for modern tyres). So 145R10 means a 145mm wide radial tyre designed for a 10-inch wheel.

R10 tyres are commonly used on car trailers, boat trailers, box trailers, caravans, classic Mini Coopers, Austin Minis, Morris Minors, golf carts, and some older compact vehicles from the 1960s-70s.

R10 tyres are becoming harder to find as most modern vehicles use larger wheels (14"+). They're available through specialist suppliers and occasionally as secondhand stock, but availability is limited. Consider upgrading to R12 or R13 if you need regular replacements.

Yes, they're identical. When the aspect ratio (profile) isn't specified, it defaults to 80%. So 145R10 = 145/80R10. Both are 145mm wide with a sidewall height of 80% of 145mm (116mm), fitting a 10-inch rim.

No, R12 tyres require 12-inch rims and physically cannot fit 10-inch wheels. The bead diameter is different. If you want to upgrade to R12 tyres, you'll need to replace your wheels (rims) as well.

Look for the DOT code on the sidewall — the last 4 digits indicate the week and year of manufacture. For example, "2519" means week 25 of 2019. Tyres over 6 years old should be carefully inspected for cracking and degradation, even if tread remains.
