Privacy Policy
How we collect, use and protect your personal information, and what you can make us do about it under the Privacy Act 2020. Plain English first, the full policy after it
- We do not sell your information. Not to anyone, not for marketing, not ever. Full stop.
- We protect it properly. SSL encryption across the whole site, secure hosting, restricted access, regular backups. Card details are handled by PCI compliant processors and never touch our servers.
- You control it. Under the Privacy Act 2020 you can see what we hold, correct it, or ask us to delete it. We answer within 20 working days because the law says so.
- Opting out is one click. Unsubscribe from marketing any time. Order confirmations and delivery updates keep coming, because those are part of your order rather than advertising.
What we collect
We collect personal information directly from you when you:
- Make a purchase, online or in store
- Contact us by phone, email or through the website
- Sign up for our newsletter, leave feedback, or enter a promotion
- Use our online tools, such as the quote generator, booking calendar or safety report
That usually means your name, contact details, delivery address, vehicle and tyre details, and what you ordered. We do not ask for information we have no use for.
Why we collect it
- To process and fulfil orders, including delivery and fitting bookings
- To provide customer service and answer your questions
- To improve the website, the tools and how the whole thing works
- To meet legal, regulatory and accounting obligations
- To send service updates and order status, and promotions only if you have opted in
- To send transactional texts where relevant, such as courier tracking or a fitting confirmation through SimplyBook.me. Those are service messages, not marketing, and they come as part of the order
- To generate anonymised, aggregated insight, for example which tyre sizes are most common in which regions
Who else sees your information
We share information with trusted third parties only where it is needed to deliver what you asked for. Here is the complete list and exactly what each one gets.
| Who | What for | What they get |
|---|---|---|
| Payment processors | Processing transactions securely | Payment details, order amount |
| Couriers and logistics | Delivering your order | Name, address, phone, order details |
| Shopify | Website hosting and ecommerce | Account and order data |
| Judge.me | Collecting product reviews | Name, email, order info |
| Google Analytics | Anonymous usage statistics | Anonymised browsing data |
| Email service providers | Order updates and newsletters | Name, email |
| SimplyBook.me | Fitting appointment bookings | Name, contact details, booking info |
| Referred mechanics | Tyre installation, only with your consent | Name, contact, tyre and vehicle details |
| Trade Me | Marketplace sales channel | Buyer details Trade Me provides to us, under their policies |
We do not sell, trade or rent your personal information to third parties for marketing. If a company is not in that table, it does not have your data from us.
Payment security
Payments are processed by PCI-DSS compliant providers including Shopify Payments and Afterpay. We never store your full card number, your CVV or your banking details on our servers. Card information is encrypted in transit and handled entirely by the payment processor, which means that even if somebody got into our systems, your card is not in there to steal.
How we protect it
- SSL/TLS encryption across the entire website
- Access restricted to authorised people only
- Regular backups and system monitoring
- Secure, established third-party platforms including Shopify and Cloudflare
No transmission over the internet is ever completely secure, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. Use strong passwords, and keep your details with us up to date.
Your rights under the Privacy Act 2020
These are rights, not favours. You do not need a reason to use them.
- Access. Ask what personal information we hold about you, and we will tell you.
- Correction. Have anything wrong or out of date fixed.
- Deletion. Ask us to delete your data, subject to what we must keep by law, such as tax records.
- Withdraw consent. Opt out of marketing at any time, without it affecting your orders.
Contact us using the details at the bottom of this page. We respond within 20 working days, which is the timeframe the Privacy Act sets.
If you are not happy with how we handle it, you can take it to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner at privacy.org.nz or on 0800 803 909. We would rather you came to us first, but that route is yours either way.
The tools, and what they do with your data
Tools that ask for information but do not store it
Most of our calculators run entirely in your browser. The tyre size calculator, pressure calculator, braking distance calculator and WOF axle checker take what you type, work out an answer and forget it. Nothing is sent to us and nothing is kept.
Tools that analyse an image you upload
Where a tool asks for a photo, that image is sent to a third-party service to be analysed and the result returned to you. We do not keep uploaded images beyond the moment it takes to process them, and we never use them for training, marketing or anything else. Camera access, where a tool asks for it, is used only for that single task and is controlled by your own device permissions.
Information you volunteer
Some tools invite you to contribute data, for example tyre wear observations that feed our research. That is always optional, always anonymised before it goes into any aggregate, and never linked back to you in anything we publish.
Order history and account data
If you create an account, your order history is held so you can see it and so we can help you faster when you call. You can ask us to delete it at any time.
Cookies and analytics
The site uses cookies and similar technologies to:
- Keep your shopping cart alive between pages
- Remember preferences such as recently viewed products
- Collect anonymous usage statistics through Google Analytics
- Run third-party features such as Afterpay messaging and Judge.me reviews
You can control cookies in your browser settings. Turning them off will break some things, most obviously your cart not surviving between visits.
How long we keep it
| What | How long |
|---|---|
| Order and transaction records | 7 years, as New Zealand tax law requires |
| Customer account data | While your account is active, deleted on request |
| Marketing preferences | Updated immediately when you opt out |
| Website analytics | Anonymised data kept indefinitely, identifiable data purged regularly |
If something goes wrong
If there is a data breach likely to cause serious harm, we:
- Notify the Office of the Privacy Commissioner as soon as practicable, as the Privacy Act 2020 requires
- Notify the people affected directly, telling them what happened and what they can do about it
- Act immediately to contain it and stop further access
You hear it from us, not from somebody else.
Other things worth knowing
Third-party links and platforms
We link to outside sites including courier tracking, payment providers and review platforms, and we sell through Trade Me. Once you are on their site you are under their privacy policy, not ours.
Children
Our services are aimed at adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children, and if we learn that we have, we delete it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy, and the current version is always here with its date. Significant changes get flagged on the site.
Asking about your data
Any privacy question, request or complaint comes to the same place, and a person handles it.
