❓ R15 TYRE FAQS
R15 indicates the tyre fits a 15-inch diameter rim. The "R" stands for radial construction. For example, 195/65R15 means 195mm width, 65% aspect ratio, radial construction, for a 15-inch wheel.
195/65R15 is the most searched R15 passenger size in New Zealand, fitting many popular sedans. For 4WDs, 31x10.5R15 is the most popular off-road size as it fits most vehicles without modification.
31x10.5R15 uses imperial measurements (31 inch diameter, 10.5 inch width). 265/75R15 uses metric (265mm width, 75% aspect ratio). They're very similar sizes — 265/75R15 is approximately 31.6" × 10.4". The imperial notation is more common for off-road tyres.
33x12.5R15 typically requires a 2-inch suspension lift and guard trimming on most 4WDs. Some vehicles (Patrol, 70 Series) have more clearance than others. 31x10.5R15 usually fits stock vehicles. Always check specific fitment for your vehicle before purchasing.
15" wheels allow for more sidewall height (the rubber between rim and tread). More sidewall = better flex over obstacles, more cushion on rough terrain, less likely to damage rims on rocks. That's why serious off-roaders often downsize from 17" or 18" to 15".
