R17 indicates the tyre fits a 17-inch diameter rim. The "R" stands for radial construction. For example, 215/55R17 means 215mm width, 55% aspect ratio, radial construction, for a 17-inch wheel.
265/65R17 is by far the most searched R17 size (~469 searches) — it's factory fitment on popular SUVs like Toyota Prado, Fortuner, and Isuzu MU-X. For passenger cars, 215/45R17 leads for performance applications (~194 searches), while 215/55R17 is most common for touring sedans (~142 searches).
Both are 265mm wide on 17-inch rims. The difference is sidewall height: 265/65R17 has a 65% aspect ratio (~30.6" diameter) and is common factory fitment. 265/70R17 has 70% aspect ratio (~31.6" diameter) — about 1" taller overall, popular as an upgrade for more ground clearance without major modifications.
Rugged Terrain (R/T) is a hybrid between All-Terrain and Mud-Terrain. RT has more aggressive tread than A/T for better off-road grip, but the pattern is designed to be quieter on highway than full M/T. Think of it as 70% off-road, 30% on-road vs M/T which is 90% off-road focused.
285/70R17 (~33") will fit most modern utes with minor guard trimming. Hilux, Ranger, Navara typically fit them with slight modifications. A 2" lift gives better clearance and prevents rubbing at full steering lock. 33x12.5R17 is a similar size but slightly wider, requiring more clearance.
